Spread Kindness (Again!) - Donate for LIFE

in #health8 years ago (edited)

Hello, everyone!

Today I wanted to share with you a little piece of our afternoon yesterday - we came upon a bit of extra time, so we popped in to the United Blood Services to make a donation :)

Going with the theme of spreading kindness from my post a few days ago (you can read it HERE) we decided to do something tangible and literally give health and life back to someone in need.

We try to go as often as we can, but our schedule often makes it hard for us… But whenever we find the time we always feel good about spending it doing this!

If you have the opportunity to donate blood, PLEASE take the time to do so. We can’t stress enough what a difference this can make.

We get phone calls all the time asking us to donate, so the need is constant and great - every blood type is needed all the time!

If you’re healthy, this is such an easy way to give a huge gift to someone else. Why wouldn’t you?

Here are a couple of tips that help you stay feeling good before and after your act of kindness:

Get your exercise in for the day BEFORE you donate
Eat a decent meal before you go
Drink plenty of water all day beforehand
Go ahead and have a tasty snack afterward (can’t imagine that’s a big ask for anybody)
Eat a big meal shortly after
Drink plenty of fluids for the rest of the day, adding electrolytes (donating blood is very dehydrating)
Finally, once you’re done, go ahead and celebrate knowing that you helped someone who REALLY needs it!

As if saving a life isn’t reason enough, you get to choose the color of your compression wrap (we got pink), there are plenty of tasty snacks around to help you refuel and replenish afterward, and you can even have a sticker (or two) if you ask nicely ;)

Although I am not a first time donor like the stickers say, I love stickers so why would I turn those down? I promise I’m an adult…

Sometimes there are even additional incentives, like movie tickets, ice cream vouchers, or even (like yesterday) cool t-shirts! We haven’t donated when there have been prizes before, so this was a nice little added surprise bonus :)

Lastly, for the record, Chris maintains that he is NOT freaked out by needles like I said - my mistake ;)

Anyway, thanks for coming with us on our trip to United Blood Services - we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did and that this inspires you to donate if you’re not a regular donor already!

Take the hour you’d spend playing on Instagram or watching a show and go save a life instead :) You’ll be glad you did, and so will someone else!

Please feel free to comment, upvote, or resteem if you’d like! :)

Very nice of you to do that 😀. Also cool to see you on dtube more.

Thank you so much 😊 you're so sweet!

That is awesome that you donate blood. My parents would go all the time. My oldest brother did it quite a bit. I don't....lol Not because I am selfish, but because I have a really bad experience with it. Back when I was 17 I went to donate blood, my friend was doing a blood drive for his Eagle Scout project. I started to donate, then got all woosy and threw up everywhere, and pale, etc. I call it going into shock, but my body wasn't really in shock. haha. Seriously, though, my blood likes to stay in my body. So I will just have to serve others in different ways, like making delicious treats and food. lol

Oh man! You poor thing! I guess it's definitely not for everyone - but so good of you to try! And making delicious treats and food benefits everyone!!! Who doesn't like treats!? :D

lol thank you. :) yes how doesn't like treats?? lol :) spreading kindness through treats, my kind of service. LOL

It is brilliant to read that you donate blood. So many owe their lives to the generosity and kindness of blood donors. Well done.

Thank you so much @trendygran :) it's an easy way to help out, I think! I'm glad to be healthy enough to do it :)
