Prefer to be rich or happy? / Lieber reich als glücklich?

This thoughtful text written by @jontoyin made me think about the topic what is most important in life.

One could name many different aspects now, for example wealth, healthiness, success at work, to be famous, having a nice family, cute children and good friends or to be occupied with interesting hobbies. But, and here I agree with @jontoyin, what finally matters is to be happy (whatever the reason for that may be). For sure I always would prefer to be happy and poor than being rich and depressed (which is probably still better than poor and depressed ...).

If I just agree with everything why writing this text at all? Because it is getting interesting at the point where @jontoyin asks what is making us happy. The answer to this question may strongly vary from person to person. In my case being happy means also to be free and independent, to decide myself when to sleep, when to wake up, when, where, how long and if at all to work, also where I want to live ... and to be able to decide all these things as well as living independently from exterior constraints it is necessary to have enough financial resources ...

I am not one of the persons who like to be wealthy to be able to live a life of luxury, I don't want to be rich just because of being rich but nevertheless: I would like to be rich because I want to be as free as the birds in the picture below ...

Dieser tiefsinnige Text von @jontoyin ließ mich darüber nachdenken, was das Wichtigste im Leben sei.

Man könnte nun vieles aufzählen, zum Beispiel Reichtum, Gesundheit, beruflichen Erfolg, berühmt zu sein, eine nette Familie, süße Kinder und gute Freunde zu haben oder sich mit spannenden Hobbys zu beschäftigen. Aber letztlich, und hier stimme ich @jontoyin zu, ist das, was zählt, ganz einfach glücklich zu sein (was auch immer der Grund dafür sein möge). Ich würde mich immer dafür entscheiden, glücklich und arm, statt reich und unglücklich zu sein (was vermutlich aber immer noch besser als arm und unglücklich wäre ...).

Wenn ich nun aber mit allem, was @jontoyin schrieb, übereinstimme, weshalb verfasse ich diesen Artikel dann überhaupt? Weil es an dem Punkt interessant wird, wo @jontoyin fragt, was uns glücklich macht. Die Antwort auf diese Frage wird von Person zu Person stark variieren. Für mich bedeutet glücklich immer zugleich auch frei und unabhängig zu sein, selbst zu bestimmen, wann ich schlafe, wann ich aufstehe, wann, wo, wie lange und ob ich überhaupt arbeite, außerdem an welchem Ort ich leben will ... und um all diese Entscheidungen selbst treffen sowie unabhängig von äußeren Zwängen leben zu können, ist es nötig, über genug finanzielle Mittel zu verfügen.

Ich bin niemand, der wohlhabend sein wollte, um ein Luxusleben führen zu können, ich will nicht um des Reichseins willen reich sein, aber dennoch: Ich wäre gerne reich, weil ich so frei sein will wie die Vögel auf dem Bild unten ...
