Hanukkah and Gaza
It is the 10 year anniversary of the Israel blockade of Gaza which turned a 140 square miles of land into a large prison cell. It's the 9th anniversary of Operation Cast Lead; an assault that killed 1,419. It's the 14th anniversary of the Iraq war. The U.S. and Israel have been bold in claiming peace is waged through war, but it's only led to perpetual war. We talk of the season of peace, but the images in Middle East skies are only those of drones, planes, helicopters, and bombs. We need to be aware of the cell we put ourselves into as well, the mental cell that shields us from culpability and the trials we blight upon the rest of the world. If Hanukkah celebrates the miracle of light it's about time we try lighting some candles that are programs for peace and flares that are policies for reconciliation instead of singing empty carols in the dark.
