Lilyraabe's Extravagant Halloween Horror Hootenanny! (contest entry)
Hey all,
Okay, well as I mentioned in an earlier post, @lilyraabe's Horror Film competition (which you still might be able to enter) is going on, and I'm skidding my entry in at the last moment, because Life.
The following film, The Changeling, came out 1980, during the height of the Slasher-film genre. Slashers, which are one of my most beloved horror subgenres, were the name of the game. Your movie didn't stand a chance if it didn't fit the template. Horror films were sold specifically on 3 items, and 3 items only: Gore, nudity, and inventive ways of getting as much gore and nudity on-screen at the same time. Gods bless 'em!
This movie has exactly zero of those qualities. For real, if you're looking for gorno, boobies, or gorno-boobies, you're shit outta luck.
Instead, The Changeling is dripping with mood, suspense, pacing, subtlety and incredible performances. Every single part of it unfolds exactly like what it is: A Ghost story, to be watched IN THE DARK, at a slumber-party, which runs the gamut from devastating grief to an ending that might just have you a bit misty-eyed. This movie bloody-well nails it.
