The whiskey tax and the Alien and Sedition Acts laid bare the truth behind the advertised intent of the Constitution. It was dead before the ink was even dry. Lysander Spooner was right. Regardless of the nature of the Constitution, it either authorised the government we have or failed to protect us from it. Either way, it's unworthy of respect.
