Supreme Court strikes down Trump bump stock ban.

The most telling aspect of today's Supreme Court ruling striking down Trump's bump stock ban is this: until Trump reversed course in 2018, the ATF had for decades consistently held that the federal law banning machine-gun possession did NOT cover bump stocks.

They maintained that position even under pro-gun control Democratic administrations like Obama. Was the Obama ATF secretly captured by the NRA and/or gun manufacturers? More likely, they simply realized they lacked the power to ban bump stocks because those things are not machine guns, as defined in the law.

Trump reversed this after the 2017 Las Vegas shooting. Banning bump stocks became a popular cause, and he wanted to take advantage. If he had similarly tortured the law to promote a right-wing cause (as he did with various policies in other areas), he would have gotten pilloried by Democrats and the media (and rightly so!). Same principle applies here.

I'm also not convinced banning bump stocks is actually a good idea. But, at the very least, it's not something the executive can do unilaterally.
