Gridcoin Community Hangout #042

*NOTE: We will be holding the hangout 2 hours earlier than usual this time around. Some folks have been stating that it would be easier for them to attend if it were a bit earlier, so we're trying out some new things. :)

A massive shout out to the BeyondBitcoin community & @officialfuzzy for providing the Gridcoin community a room in their mumble server for free, and to @cm-steem for being such a wonderful host until recently. I will be assuming hosting and moderation duties from now on, with a little help from my friends. :D

What is Gridcoin?

Gridcoin securely rewards BOINC computation on top of Proof of Stake. Reward allocation is distributed, not centralized unlike other distributed computing related cryptocurrencies.

Where can I listen to past hangouts?

Why are we holding these hangouts?

  • A mumble conference call can provide significant advantages over communicating via forums and IRC.
  • To create opportunities to inform the public of new Gridcoin, BOINC and related services & their development progress.
  • To bridge relations between the cryptocurrency & BOINC communities, and our users.

How long will the hangout last?

Anywhere from 45 minutes to 4 and a half hours!

When the Gridcoin Community Hangouts start really picking up traction we can become more strict with allocated speaking time if need be (so you're not waiting hours to talk).

Want to suggest a topic to discuss?

Reply with your suggestions in this Steemit post & order of discussion will be from highest to lowest upvotes.

Can we discuss anything?

It's advisable to stay generally on topic, attendees are distributed around the world so they may not (likely won't) share the same views regarding controversial topics not related to Gridcoin/BOINC/cryptocurrency.

That said, this 'on topic' guideline fizzles away once official recording has ended & the hangout becomes a more relaxed environment.

Gridcoin Hangout #042 will be held on:

October 28, 2017 @ 7pm UTC.

Compare 7pm UTC to your time zone!

I'd like the new user experience to be discussed. Gridcoin has a reputation for being difficult to get into and new users needing to be enthusiasts.

Are there any changes in this area planned by the devs?

From my perspective the things that could be improved:

  • Telling the user what step of the setup they are on, what needs to be done (if anything) and how many steps to go.
  • Having potentially confusing terms such as difficulty and weights not presented as the first thing users see. Perhaps a separate tab called Mining Info?

Although it probably doesn't matter too much if new users don't understand the Gridcoin jargon straight away, they don't know that it's not important and it leads to the perception that the setup is difficult and Gridcoin is for advanced users.

I'd love to join the hangout but I'll be asleep sadly. Thanks!

Some things to discuss:

  • Reforming hangouts. Such as, by adding specific roles for people to be fulfilling and rewarded for doing such roles. Maybe hosts and co-hosts can be given paid incentive, not to mention the edits could also be paid work. A person could be a paid moderator as a co-host who can help run discussion as well as keep track of who was active during in order to keep things legit and smooth-running. This helps reduce the pressure put on the editorial process because of how the incentives were previously judged during that time post-production. For a while we were receiving funds for the hangouts and this hasn't happened nor has there been any attempt at having it back again. I aim to fix that and help maintain incentives for the community hangouts/podcast.

  • Recent Github changes or development. Any developers who can speak about this?

  • Any recent network issues?

  • The more recent meteoric rise in the price of Bitcoin, which the price of Gridcoin still is tied to. New all-time highs of like $6100 and up.

  • Get Gridcoin on any more exchanges? Maybe discuss recent account disruption at Bittrex and how Bitfinex is not supporting US located accounts anymore.

I'll probably edit this post with more. Everyone, please feel free to post topics or suggestions! Even if it's just to introduce yourself, or share an experience, everyone is welcome to come to the hangout and discuss.

Excellent ideas @fkinglag, we do need structure in the hangouts.

It will make @peppernrino's job easier when it comes to editing and whether we like it or not people do look at structure when they investigate cryptos.

We mustn't lose sight of the fact that these hangouts are a 'window', through which the world out there sees us and judges us as a community.

The listeners and participants will judge us by the content standard and manner in which we portray Gridcoin.

Go on click on it again so you post a duplicate!!

I think one of the biggest questions for paying people is where the money comes from. I think there are some interesting options to look into.

I have said and am still adamant about putting up 4000 GRC from my wallet balance in order to actually fund the model. Otherwise I have no working concept in the proposal for more funds, heh. I'm going to create a new wallet for this, too, in order to manage the funds. Other people are welcome to share other ideas as to how to handle the funds. I wouldn't mind taking care of it at first for the time being. Much more of all this needs to get ironed out. I'm working out the details.

looking forward to the discussion

I can't upvote your replies enough.

That's the transaction error bug .. posts duplicate and some times triplicate identical posts.

Go on, once more for luck!!

Funny this is the only one I can edit? Yet this post is younger than the one above?

Extended Development Proposals, Polls, and Roadmap taking us to January 1st 2018.

More information and material will be presented during the hangout.

Gridcoin State of the Network Report

Inspired by taconator over at the bitshares hangouts, I hope to bring a goody bag of stats to share, inform, and discuss. Stats like BOINC Gridcoin Team stats, market stats, difficulty/blockchain security stats, BOINC project important news, updates, and stats, and anything else we can think of.

It would cover the 2 weeks since the last hangout.

I'm wondering what you all would like to see in a report like this. Please add suggestions in the comments.

@grcdailystats and @erkan already collect a lot of information that I hope to bring into the hangout.

If you want to help, reach out on slack in the #hangout channel.

Are there any major announcements or updates for today?

I was never able to recover my desktop Gridcoin wallet, so I now use open.GRC on DEX to collect payouts.
