Do you think that whitelisted math projects will eventually hold Gridcoin back?

Im not really against them, but, particularly these two seems like such a stupid huge waste of resources

  • Amicable Numbers : Only real world application, sharing a number with a loved one . So much for science.

  • Moo Wrapper : They try to break the RC5-72 algorithm, which hasnt been used for a long time. ETA? about 160 years.

Then there are the number theory ones, while not useless, as some have important real world applications, and some can lead to new theories that lead to another theories that lead to real world applications, they are just so boring to the average public. NFS, Numberfields, Collazt sieve, Yafu.

Special mention to PrimeGrid. While PrimeGrid is far from useless, prime numbers are important in science and specially in computing, we dont really need such huge numbers to this day, and computing for these numbers when we start to need them would be much more efficient. That isnt taking in account the possibility of Quantum Computing breaking prime number based cryptography in the long run.

I believe that we either shouldnt whitelist them, or we should count them as a single project for the rewards.

But most people still select the projects they look up to I think, be it by personal interest, gain or ideal.

If it would be to crunch just for the sake of maximizing profit or contribution statistics then I wouldn't be bothered.

Everyone makes a difference! It's the beauty of distributed compute. Many little fish become a big fish... that can find prime numbers and cure cancer...

I took that analogy too far.

What's the point of PrimeGrid? Never understood that...

PrimeGrid purpose is to compute huge prime numbers, these numbers are useful because they are the basis of encryption, just by connecting to this site you are using them, with SSL using this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSA_(cryptosystem)#Operation to secure the connection. It just happens that to this day we already have enough prime numbers, and it would be much more efficient to find them 10 years in the future when we do need them.

Also Quantum computing can potentially break this algorithm in seconds. Its literally the only application they have to this day. If we managed to make them work.

but PrimeCoin network does the same thing - so why we need to waste computing power to PrimeGrid?

PrimeGrid exists since 2005. Primecoin exists since 2013. and it's pretty much abandoned today while PrimeGrid is thriving. The very fact that you are a Primecoin fanboi is probably enough proof that it's simply a bad choice, with very slim prospects.

You are ignoring potential future applications. Most of the mathematics we take for granted today had little or no use when it was first discovered. While unlikely, there may very well be a use case for amicable numbers some time down the line. Moowrapper, I see no value in.

That said, compared to some other projects with very clear, current use cases I totally see where you are coming from.

Of course, its just that if amicable numbers have any application in the future, we have not only computed enough of them , but would be much more efficient to compute them in the future when they are needed. Same goes with the prime numbers.

I understand your frustration. Logic is very solid.

I can think of the following positive aspects of these projects:

  • Some people may enjoy finding primes or amicable numbers, thus it's not more wasteful than playing computer games for fun.
  • These projects might help to stabilize gridcoin network. I see there are quite often situations when projects fail to deliver new WU. For this kind of math problems it seems very easy to generate any number of new WU.
