We should think back to where we came from

Recently @jringo and @guk authored posts about how the Gridcoin network generates value. 1, 2 These are important discussions and I'm happy that they are happpening in the public on steemit.

The but

Sometimes I'm afraid that we as a community forget where we came from. In the first place Gridcoin was created to help scientific research. Most of the older users are long-term BOINCER. And so am I. Gridcoin is here to support BOINC and not to compete with it.
Our first goal should be to make sure that more and more people join the BOINC and Gridcoin network to support science.
Gridcoin will probably never satisfy most of the investors looking for fast profit. But they should not be our target group. We should aim to recruite loyal BOINC users and help them to pay for their electricity bill.
It may look strange for outstanding people only reading about how Gridcoin could get a higher value. So for all: it's more about science than about money!

Sort:

well, you make a good point but let's not forget, higher value means more people coming to mine, hence more people doing scientific research. The cause justifies the means ^__^

I agree, but in a sense the hashing/script mining crowd just want money, they hop from coin to coin whatever is the most profitable in that day. Then they sell and create constant downward pressure on the price.
I kind of think these 'predatory miners' are bad for anyone who values the actual currencies.
Higher price bringing people to mine Gridcoin is half the story, convincing them to stay is the real mission, both for BOINC and Gridcoin.

Really good point and this attitude will bring the real value instead of blowing up a bubble.
FTW Science!

We should aim to recruit loyal BOINC users and help them to pay for their electricity bill.

How do you plan to help them pay electricity bills? Where the value of GRC is derived from? Answers to these questions is what is lacking for me in your post.

I agree that we should not forget what the priorities are, not agree to short-sighted proposals aiming to pump value short term.

I was wandering about gridcoin nature and value in my first post on steemit. Value of many crypto coins / assets is a pure speculation. It is possible that current, not that huge GRC value, is mostly speculative. As crypto sphere is maturing, bubbles will rise and break as it was with internet ventures a few years ago. Is gridcoin value sustainable? Is it just another boinc credit / badge, only transferable?

Boinc credits do not help paying bills. For gridcoin to be able to, it has to draw it's value from somewhere. Allowing commercial projects seems like one of possibilities - while it would bring opportunities and intrinsic value, it would also bring pressure on development and community.

Well, many questions, few answers we have ;)

You're right with your statement that my post does not provide an answer to the question where does the value of Gridcoin come from.
In my opinion a very good thing would be Gridcoin intern platform like ebay that allows users to trade things for Gridcoin.
In my opinion fiat has only value because it is accepted everywhere and you can pay with it. But I'm not an economist ;)

I love the whole "helping science while making money" idea behind Gridcoin, but at the end of the day it's still a currency. I believe we should always stay true to helping scientific research, but if we focus solely on it then Gridcoin will be left in the dust. We shouldn't let our idyllic view of Gridcoin hinder it's growth, because if we don't step in allow for more "private" projects, then another crypto will, making us obsolete. At least that's my opinion. I'm not trying to sound all pessimistic, I love Gridcoin and I just want to see it reach its potential.
