strategies for challenge "8th BOINC Pentathlon" (May 5 - 19)

in #gridcoin7 years ago (edited)

2 projects for the 5 Pentathlon disciplines were announced.

What strategies do you recommend for the 8th Boinc Pentathlon?

  • e.g. one strategy could be bunkering (aka: "BOINC like mad")
  • another one is project rain motivation (e.g. Scaletrix offered here, see also tweet), please send your donations to address: RznFsJfiqSS2N9HcnpJM5i3pgkswCWrZEE
  • please mention more strategies you'd like to see/support

Let's look at the current situation (team RAC worldwide):

Of course the other 31 teams signing up for the Pentathlon will change their strategies for the Pentathlon.

another motivator, from Cosmology@home:

  • top3 users + teams get mentioned in paper:

"To slightly sweeten the deal, we'd like to add a few more thank-yous to the paper, so we will again take the top 3 users and top team (excluding the winners from last time) and add your names to the paper. Although you're welcome to start crunching Planck jobs now, the contest will be only considering Planck jobs returned during the Pentathlon which runs from May 5th to May 19th (see above link for a countdown). We'll post an updated page to keep track of the leaders this week. Good luck everyone!"

Cosmology@Home: The top 3 users & top team during the 8th BOINC Pentathalon will appear in their paper! cosmologyathome.org/forum_thread.p… @cosmic_mar

Planck are VM jobs, I knew that 32GB RAM would come in handy again!

Currently, 107 BOINC teams + 776 users joined the contest,

I think that we should do a project-rain 'sendmany' distribution of GRC onto our team for each completed goal, regardless of the outcome.

Im dontating some Rain funds to RznFsJfiqSS2N9HcnpJM5i3pgkswCWrZEE, whoever owns that please Rain responsibly :)

Thanks for your contribution! :)

can you explain more: "whoever owns that please Rain responsibly :-)" ? e.g. do you want to donate your GRC contribution to only 1 BOINC project, or divided over all ?

That GRC address is from my wallet

Im just kidding erkan, I know you will do the right thing

There's a pretty poor team participation rate, only 32 teams out of the hundreds/thousands of teams? Perhaps it's due to the inter-team rivalry & the association with seti-germany that the participation is low? More plausible is that there has been poor marketing in the run up outwith participating communities.

I've donated to Pentathlon Rain account, but apparently this whole 'team competition' thing is not attracting that much attention anymore. We are no.1 for so long now (and increasing the lead), I rarely even check the stats lately. And bunkering is turning most challenges into a competition in fiddling with WUs, not into an effort to increase computational output.

I think that inter-team communications have broken down due to the 'team-poaching' rhetoric that is flung about.

Bunkering isn't so much of a practice within the Gridcoin community (because we try to encourage constant crunching), it's really a tactic utilized by other teams to try and get ahead of team Gridcoin in challenges.

Bunkering: totally.
Last year we lost a Pentathlon discipline because of that. And we were before the Pentathlon at #1 place RAC-wise for that BOINC project

Of course, we have our magnitudes to upkeep and bunkering is useless for that, since magnitude is really a long-term effort. But when the goal is to simply amass maximum amount of credits in a short period of time, bunkering becomes an attractive "solution". Never cared about it really, even long before Gridcoin.

the 3rd project was chosen:

Switched to OpenZika in World Community Grid :)

Same , I ditched Amicable Numbers @peppernrino can have it along with for this week its cousin stop@home and switched all ARM to OpenZika and the CPU boxens to Cosmology for now. Have not tested Einstein on BILD but learned today that it can be more finicky than I expected. 1 server wont run any cosmology running BILD but the other 3 will ( different cpu's ) , so maybe my machines will run yoyo@home when the time comes or 3 or at least 1 extra.. We will see.. But go Team Gridcoin! I bet you didn't expect Mr. Vila La Gridxit to join in!!! Cosmology plank vm wu is fastest on osx btw... just sayin
