“WE HAVE TO be focused on what we want to enable,” said Ben Gomes, Google’s search engine chief. “And then when the opening happens, we are ready for it.”
It was Wednesday, July 18, and Gomes was addressing a team of Google employees who were working on a secretive project to develop a censored search engine for China, which would blacklist phrases like “human rights,” “student protest,” and “Nobel Prize.”
“You have taken on something extremely important to the company,” Gomes declared, according to a transcript of his comments obtained by The Intercept. “I have to admit it has been a difficult journey. But I do think a very important and worthwhile one. And I wish ourselves the best of luck in actually reaching our destination as soon as possible.”
Gomes joked about the unpredictability of President Donald Trump and groaned about the ongoing trade war between the U.S. and China, which has slowed down Google’s negotiations with Communist Party officials in Beijing, whose approval Google requires to launch the censored search engine.
That Communist search engine was called,

THE INVESTMENT ARMS of the CIA and Google are both backing a company that monitors the web in real time – and says it uses that information to predict the future.
The company is called Recorded Future, and it scours tens of thousands of websites, blogs and Twitter accounts to find the relationships between people, organizations, actions and incidents – both present and still-to-come. In a white paper, the company says its temporal analytics engine "goes beyond search" by "looking at the 'invisible links' between documents that talk about the same, or related, entities and events."
The idea is to figure out for each incident who was involved, where it happened and when it might go down. Recorded Future then plots that chatter, showing online "momentum" for any given event.
Google’s true origin partly lies in CIA and NSA research grants for mass surveillance
Two decades ago, the US intelligence community worked closely with Silicon Valley in an effort to track citizens in cyberspace. And Google is at the heart of that origin story. Some of the research that led to Google’s ambitious creation was funded and coordinated by a research group established by the intelligence community to find ways to track individuals and groups online.
The intelligence community hoped that the nation’s leading computer scientists could take non-classified information and user data, combine it with what would become known as the internet, and begin to create for-profit, commercial enterprises to suit the needs of both the intelligence community and the public. They hoped to direct the supercomputing revolution from the start in order to make sense of what millions of human beings did inside this digital information network. That collaboration has made a comprehensive public-private mass surveillance state possible today.
The story of the deliberate creation of the modern mass-surveillance state includes elements of Google’s surprising, and largely unknown, origin. It is a somewhat different creation story than the one the public has heard, and explains what Google cofounders Sergey Brin and Larry Page set out to build, and why.
But this isn’t just the origin story of Google: It’s the origin story of the mass-surveillance state, and the government money that funded it.

John P. Carlin is the common denominator in the Russian dossier fiasco. Carlin was a Senior Justice Department official in charge of the National Security Department (NSD). The Department of Justice is responsible for prosecuting federal crimes.
Carlin's other duties were:
Providing legal oversight of the NSA's surveillance activities (National Security Agency)
Representing the government before the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISA) and the Committee on Foreign Investments
Acting as lead investigator into breaches of public and private sector e-mail systems and protocol (like Hillary Clinton's email leaks and her private access given to others of non-secure top secret information)
Overseeing the investigations and prosecution of espionage cases, and cases involving the illegal export of military and strategic commodities (like Uranium One)
Managing cases of foreign hacking into domestic computer systems (like attempting to rig the election of a U.S. President)
There are others, but this is Very Important,
Selecting, approving, and allowing top security clearances for 70 private contractors like Fusion GPS and CrowdStrike to have unrestricted access to the nation's surveillance data (which the court ruled to be illegal).
Writing and signing FISA warrants (see page 31 of attached).
Approving surveillance of 30,055 American citizens during the 2016 Presidential Campaign (which the court ruled to be illegal)
- As head of the National Security Division, Carlin oversaw 400 employees. His department was responsible for protecting the country against international and domestic terrorism, espionage, cyber, and other national security threats.

The suspected gunman behind the deadly shooting in Strasbourg, France Tuesday evening has been identified and was on a “Terror Watch List,” though officials refused to release the man’s name or age.
