GOOD NEWS! The end of the ivory trade?

in #goodnews7 years ago

Great news for Dumbo and his friends!

China has been known for years as the first importer of ivory in the world. It is estimated that as much as 70% of the ivory in the world was circulating through the formerly legal Chinese trade. This led to the dramatic number of 50 elephants being killed every day by poachers, but this is about to change.

In March this year, China officially banned ivory crafting in the entire country and outlets selling ivory products are to close their doors by the end of the year. In the meantime, the country is reinforcing the border controls and many actors of the illegal ivory trade are now sitting in jail.

This series of events had an enormous impact on the global market, leading to the outlets to try and empty their stocks. As a result, the price of raw ivory dropped by half in the last 6 months.

In conclusion, ivory trade is now becoming a very risky and quite unprofitable business, and that's the great news for your favorite pachyderm !
