残阳如血 Blood-red Sunset

长空雁叫霜晨月。

While Mao Zedong's political life is more than controversial, he is actually a surprising good poet. The poem here was written by him after a particularly fierce battle with Chiang Kai-shek's KMT army. The poem can be roughly translated as follows:

The winds are howling,
on this frosty morning.
The moon shines,
as wild-geese screeched through the sky.

On this frosty morning, the moon shines,
Horses gallops, battle horns sound deep.

Some say this mountain fort is as solid as an iron wall.
But we marched on.

We marched on,
across the mountains rolling like the sea,
towards the blood-red sunset.
