Huge Gold Nugget Found in Australia

An anonymous retiree recently came across an enormous gold nugget while out prospecting in Australia. The nugget, which is estimated to be worth upwards of $110,000, was found in the remote Goldfields area of Western Australia. The ecstatic man told reporters that he has been searching through the same section of ground for many years with varying degrees of luck, using a metal detector. Wishing to remain anonymous in order to thwart would-be thieves and relatives looking for a hand-out, he finally found what he was seeking thanks to some updated technology.

Locals have dubbed the nugget 'Duck's Foot' thanks to it's dubious resemblance to the aquatic bird's paddlers.
The specimen weighs 3.23 kg, and contains about 2 kg of gold, or about 68 troy ounces, and was buried about 31 inches in the clay soil that characterizes the ground in the area. The prospector spent more than 2 hours carefully digging the nugget out, once it was located. A close acquaintance of the man, who runs a small rock-hound shop in Bunbury, has known the finder for years, and confessed that the individual has become an expert at locating deep-buried nuggets.

The discovery has renewed interest in the area among fortune seekers, and vindicated the notions of the die-hard mineral hunters who have insisted that plenty of gold can still be found in areas that appear to have been picked clean.
The finder of the Duck's Foot is not the only one reaping the rewards of diligence in the area. RNC Minerals recently announced significant finds in the same region. The Canadian company found 9,250 ounces of the precious mineral in recent weeks at the Beta Hunt gold mine near Kambala, WA. This equals out to almost $16 million dollars (American), boosting the companies stock and enticing investors. Included in the recent finds were two large nuggets that weighed 95 and 63 kgs apiece, with over 4000 oz of gold. The firm's "Father's Day Vein" has produced over $40 million from 24,000 oz of the precious metal since its discovery.
