Captain Jean-Luc Picard leads the final assault on the borg cube (gif)

Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew of the Enterprise E arrive on the battle scene late in the fight and as they were ordered by Vice Admiral Hayes not to particapate in the fight to defend Earth from the Borg incursion (year 2373). Hayes believed Picard was an unstable element due to him being captured by the Borg six years earlier.

Picard violates a direct order by coming to the rescue. Once the Enterprise E arrives on the battle field they find out the Admiral's ship was destroyed. Picard assumes command of the Federation fleet and orders them to fire all their weapons on a vital part of the borg cube that wasn't detectable by sensors. Having been assimilated by the Borg collective Picard's knowledge of their weakneasses made him the best man for the job.
