Daily Field Notes #40
Welcome to the 40th Daily Field Note! Here you find the top post of the day, one covering each scientific field that is included by Geopolis. Since these authors put a lot of effort in writing a good post they surely deserve the extra exposure.
Geopolis is a project to promote and connect authors who write in the fields of global sciences. Upvotes are currently worth more than $1,50 so don't hesitate to get involved or become a member for higher rewards! You can read more about the project and how to join here:

Ecology: Using volcanic rocks is an effective way of trapping CO2 from the atmosphere!
As new research conducted by scientists from University of Sheffield has found, farming with fast-reacting silicate rocks effectively captures CO2 from the atmosphere. Crops also benefit from pest resilience and higher soil fertility. The study was led by Professor David Beerling, Director of the Leverhulme Centre for Climate Change Mitigation at the University of Sheffield, who said: Human societies have long known that volcanic plains are fertile, ideal places for growing crops without adverse human health effects, but until now there has been little consideration for how adding further rocks to soils might capture carbon. This study has transformed how we think about managing our ...
Geography: Time-lapse Video w/ Explanation: Cumulus Cloud Formation - Captured on the Appalachian Blue Ridge Parkway
The time-lapse video can be viewed below. Enjoy This image displays cumulus clouds forming over the Roanoke Valley in Virginia. It occurred to me recently that I have quite a bit I'd like to share with the Steemit community besides just writing articles. It is a hobby of mine to capture time-lapses of cloud movement and development. While I don't have a phenomenal camera to do so, my iPhone does a great job accomplishing this task. I attempted to post this video on d.tube, but for some reason I was having technical difficulties with uploading a snap. If anyone can assist me with this issue, it would be greatly appreciated. In the mea...
Geology: What I learnt today, petroleum formation, origin and importance.
Hello steemers, how do you do? It still your very own @rebeccafl, so since lectures has started fully I decided to share what I learnt in the classroom here. And that just the very best, cos I can reads ahead of the class and get better understanding of the lecture. I hope I will be able to get you updated. Petroleum is a Latin word of is a naturally occurring , yellow-to-black liquid found in geological formations beneath the Earth 's surface. This is completely different oil that comes from vegetable source such as olive. But modern research as traced the origin to lipids (oil), oil ...
History: Ancient Egypt: The Old Kingdom
The Nile was the source of all life in Egypt. It had what no other water body had at that time, predictability in flooding. The Ancient Egyptians used a basin irrigation system which easily watered their crops and kept the soil fertile with plenty of nutrients and minerals. This meant that the Egyptians could grow more with less, which allowed them a huge surplus of food to aid their growth and trade. With less manpower and resources dedicated to farming, Ancient Egyptians had more time to focus on art, technology and construction.
The Rise of Central Administration In a unified Egypt, a new class of citizens came to power, these were the scribes and state officials. They w...
