"Don't mistake activity with achievement." ~ John Wooden

Welcome to the 155th Daily Field Note! Here you find the top post of the day, one covering each scientific field that is included by Geopolis. Since these authors put a lot of effort in writing a good post they surely deserve the extra exposure.

Geopolis is a project to promote and connect authors who write in the fields of global sciences. You can read more about the project and how to join here:

Geography: Mt Cordeaux - South-East Queensland, Australia

Original post by @terrylovejoy

Cunningham's Gap section of Scenic Rim, taken from the Cunningham Highway. The Highway ascends to the U-shaped saddle in the middle of the picture. What better way to spend a cool winter's day than doing an easy mountain climb My daughter's and I headed off nearly 2 hours drive south-west of Brisbane to the scenic rim, a large ancient eroded volcanic remnant that contains the highest mountains in South-east Queensland, Australia. People from overseas might call these hills, but they're about as impressive as they get here with the tallest, Mt Superbus, reaching 1375 meters above sea level. As a matter of interest, Mt Superbus is pronounced Mt Superb-us, not Mt Super-bus as I've heard ...

Geology: A Deeper Look At Shallow Geothermal - Part 2: Horizontal Optimization

Original post by @gra

If I were a gambling man, I would bet on the notion that our global energy future must be multifaceted. Through a gradual transition toward renewable energies, several technologies have gained significant momentum in recent years including solar, wind, and geothermal. While solar and wind are familiar to most, a point of confusion regarding geothermal technology is that there are actually two different types - 'deep' and 'shallow' geothermal. This is discussed in more detail in an introductory post on the topic.

Ecology: How Humanity is Changing the Course of Evolution Part 2: New Biomes, New Species

Original post by @mountainwashere

Humanity is, without a doubt, the most extreme stimulus currently altering the course of evolution on Earth. Some of the changes are more extreme than others. One of the most extreme ways? The changes we've inflicted upon the planet have resulted in entirely new species. Now, to be clear, we're not just discussing deliberately bred human species here. While dogs, corn, and plenty of other species were deliberately bred by humans, and while these species have completely altered the shape of the planet, other species have been created by human action- more specifically, they've evolved in response to our construction of brand new, unique biomes. The first one we're going to talk about? A brand new species of mosquito.
