I was just talking about land subsidence from overuse of water not too long ago with somebody. Apparently, the much of the San Juanquin valley in California has also subsided (over 1m!) because of water being drawn out of the water table.
Oh, big time! It might even be making the region more susceptible to quakes. If you're interested, I highly recommend the book Cadillac Desert I listed in my bibliography.
