Dutch Agate...!!

agate, the dutch variations...!!

All pictures are made by me, all Agates found by me, carved and polished by me...

Agate is a rock consisting primarily of cryptocrystalline silica, Agate is essentially quartz, but with banding, colors, maybe a quartz heard, chiefly chalcedony, alternating with microgranular quartz.

Always when i go hunting for Agate i use the guide-stones to see if the day is worthwhile...
If there is no Jasper.. there is probably no Agate.
This is my favorite piece of jasper...!! it is called Poppy-Jasper...
And it is very rare to find in the Netherlands.

Most agates found in my region are small, maybe 20 tot 40 mm, but there are bigger ones...
Here is a beauty....!
Raw, as i found it and after the works.... this one did take 10 hours to Finnish...

Agate is characterized by its fineness of grain and variety of color. from yellow to red to purple and blue...

Although agates may be found in various kinds of host rock,
they are classically associated with volcanic rocks and can be common in certain metamorphic rocks.

I go rockhunting as much as i possibly can.
Agates are very rare in the netherlands since the country has no agates of it's own. but there are a lot of sand-quarries in my area, the agates are located on a depth of say 12-35 meters.... in huge sandbanks...!!

they suck up the sand and do not use the bigger stones... maybe they make split out of it... so if i do not find them in the huge piles of rock... they are forever gone.!!

Dutch agates were washed down eons ago by:
The Rhine River and his tributaries like the Mosel, the Nahe and the Saar.
The river Niers, Its wellspring is near Erkelenz, south of Mönchengladbach, in North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany).
it is now a small river, but i was huge at one point in history...
and the Niers is the big supplier of the Agates i hunt for, near the river Rhine there is also a lot to find

Some agates show characteristics which are typical for the Saar/Nahe region in Germany.
Idar-Oberstein is the most famous city in that region and famous for the agates found there.
they came rolling down... and now mine to find...

For me, the most beautiful type of agate are the so called 'pseudomorphic agates'.
This is a type of agate where the original minerals are replaced by agate.

But it would be better to not even use specific terms when you simply don't know what the inclusions are.
Call them by more truly descriptive terms: "Sprays" and "pincushions" and "reticulated frameworks."

I have several sorts of agates and jaspers from Germany and the Netherlands and other parts of the world,

But there it is. tha magic....!!
if you find them yourself the feeling is way different then if you buy one in a shop...! and if you can fill a house with these beauties....!!! it is a treasure.....

Wow such a beautiful collection! You have inspired me to go rock hunting too.

and this is just a very small part of my collection.... i have tons...!!

Awesome! How long have you been collecting and polishing them?

my first encounter with collecting stuff, stones, skulls and things like that was when i was 5 years old...

the second wave came when i was 10 when i found a
Ammonite fossil in Switzerland, in the mountains, a sea creature at 1200 meters, i was flabbergasted... skulls, feathers, fossils, rare historical stuff like coins and so on...

the thirds big wave of hunting was when i was 23, finding skulls and shells everywhere, cat whiskers, bones, rare fossils in riverbeds, in the Forrest, on vacation, in my garden, it is everywhere....... i really got into it, but also after a couple of years i did go somewhere else, got a job and so on...

the last wave is still going on... now it is serious.. for like 5 years ( im 45 ) i was introduced in a lapidary club for cutting and polishing and a good friend of mine showed me the way into the quarries in my area. there was a time i would spend 4 days a week out in the quarries, to get my head clear and the bags filled up...

i also take my kids with me... they are good hunters too...!!

wow. this is a serious skill! Its nice that your kids are also interested in it.
I have a very very small collection of rocks myself. But I dont know if it is any good.

the only one who can tell if its good... is you, so if you are happy with what you have, there is no comparison or opinion from others that can do something about you and your idea of good, at least, that is how it worked for me. there are no others who can tell me what is good for me....
i have no job, no serious money, is that any good... ??? but i have a great time... living. skills i have, being passionate, intention, living in the now, learned to focus on the things on the ground, the rocks, crystals, fossils, artifacts call for you if you listen.... archaeology and geology is everywhere. most people i know can not do what i do...
but the main is that that what you see is your reality, the rest is words, belief, imagination, thoughts about the past...or future.... it all has no meaning...!! only the now and the choices before you, in full consciousness....!!

Its true! Thank you for these inspiring and positive words. :)

You have found some amazing agates! The sand mining technique that they use there makes it much easier to find those huge stones. Do you need permission to hunt for agates in the quarries?

permission, ehmmm... yes, and on some they do not allow searching... but i go in the weekends and hop over the fence.....

I guess that just adds to the thrill of the search!

yes.... it makes it more fun... and keeps the other rockhounds away....!! :-)

Great picture! I like it 👍
