1875 Gentleman rules that are still true

in #gentlemen6 years ago

The idea of a “gentleman” has changed over and over again over the years because of the historical, political and national changes.

However, it has always been associated with a classic and attractive appearance, someone with a remarkable intelligence and, of course, good manners.

Here are a few rules that gentlemen had to follow in 1875, that should be followed in the present, too.

  • Even if you’re absolutely sure that your opponent is saying wrong things, that don’t match with your vision, stay calm, have an intelligent and impersonal discussion, as if their opinion matters.

  • You have all the rights to have political preferences, but you should never talk about them! It’s better if your opponent believes that you’re a bad politician, rather than a pseudo-gentleman.

  • Never interrupt anybody, even if they are wrong. You have no right to correct anybody if they didn’t ask you to do so.

  • The rudest thing you could do is constantly checking the time. It doesn’t matter how bored you are. Once you have accepted to have a conversation with somebody, you have to do it right.

  • Always be polite, honest, and don’t act like you’re superior. Don’t raise your voice on no one, don’t talk too much and too loud trying do prove something.

  • Talk shortly, clearly and on point. Too many details make communication harder.

  • Avoid any subject that refers to someone who isn’t there. Gossip isn’t for gentlemen.

  • Speak your maternal language correctly, respect every written and verbal grammatical rule. At the same time, avoid too formal language because it creates a distance between you and the person you are speaking with.

  • Don’t tend to be exclusive, profound and distinct, by avoiding fun and communication with other people. Try to act in conformity with the person you’re with, as long as their actions match your values and the ethical code of a gentleman.

I am not always a gentleman, but I am trying to be one, even if it's hard sometimes. Good luck!

"Always be polite, honest, and don’t act like you’re superior. Don’t raise your voice on no one, don’t talk too much and too loud trying do prove something." ...this is really important, though all these rules are important. Me too trying to be a gentle lady!! Good luck ..

Totaly agree @jwolf the basic of all defines a tru 'gentleman' the most important for me is sticking to your maternal language....it trully defines what we are...just putting up mask on our wont going to helps.....a true gentle man alway present the trueness of being human.

you are a true gent my man :)

Excellent article @jwolf. I agree with what you stated here. I have a problem with my volume(I blame poor hearing) but I try to fix it when I can. So many issues can be resolved or at least unescalated if both people or groups would follow the gentlemen instructions. Thank you for providing an interesting post. It'll remind me to be a gentleman in my next conversation.

And also wear nice clothes !

Brilliant and relevant. I struggle with :

"Never interrupt anybody, even if they are wrong. You have no right to correct anybody if they didn’t ask you to do so."

Thanks for the article!

Speak your maternal language correctly, respect every written and verbal grammatical rule. At the same time, avoid too formal language

that sounds tricky

True as ever today, sir.
