The unseen

Often you hear people talk about “the bump in the night”. I was a sceptic and this is my story.

My family and I lived in the city. We were real city slickers. My dad is a mining engineer and was relocated to a small town with less than a thousand residents and a lot of abandoned mines.

Moving into our new home was very exciting. However, I found sinister odours around the house which was very strange because the smell was not consistent but rather occasional. The odours occurred mostly during the night.

During the course of the night I would hear footsteps, dragging of chairs and knocking . Mum and dad reassured me that it was an old house.

Until one night, I decided to investigate the knocking. I walked down the hallway and got that bad odour. I could not tell what it was. Suddenly I could feel the presence of someone. I could sense that I was not alone. Chills ran up my spine and the smell was getting stronger. I felt cold and began to tremble. Terrified to run, as I could see a shadow from the corner of my eye and it was not mine! I had never felt closer to God like I had at that moment and began to pray. My nerves finally calmed down and as I turned, it was as if a cloud of smoke dispersed.

As I mentioned in my introduction, I was a sceptic and convinced myself that my mind was playing games with me.

Once the darkness had fallen, I was building up the courage that I will get through the night. As the strike of sunset kicked in, the smell set in and so did my fear. I did not question the smell anymore. I was the only one who smelt and heard it.  I did not want my family to label me as crazy.

We were finished with dinner, family time was over and everyone was getting ready to go to bed. Not for me, I was the only one who could smell and hear shadows behind me. I walked to my room with my back against the passage wall. Terrified, knowing that the smell would only leave at sunrise which is 10 hours from now.

I got into my bed with my headphones and room light on. As I became more relaxed, I heard a loud thud and the running of little feet down the passage. I immediately jumped off my bed and ran to my parent’s room. As I entered the passage, I saw a toddler entering my parents room.

I went back to my room and got into my bed. I realised that we do not have a toddler in the house! I then dozed off and when my eyes opened, to my delight, it was sunrise.

I got up to make myself a cup of coffee and found my parents sitting in the kitchen and my mum was crying. She explained how she had a nightmare of being strangled by a little person and she could not breath. My dad convinced her that it was just a dream.  I did not talk about what I had seen because once again, I didn’t want to be called crazy.

Another day had passed and the sun began to set. I went to bed as usual with the lights on. I dozed off and was awakened by the sound  of my draw opening. I heard scratching in the corner of my room. I could see a cloud of smoke. Terrified and numb, I witnessed a little head moving on the other side of my bed, coming towards me and it jumped onto the bed. It looked like a toddler with droopy eyes and nails that looked like claws. It had little razor sharp teeth. It started strangling me and I could not scream or move. I just lied there in horror.  My dad barged into the room  and the little creature disappeared as well as the cloud of smoke.
