Hosting @virtualgrowth for Our Sustainable Feast in the Garden of Eden

in #gardenofeden7 years ago (edited)

It is a grey but happy day in the Garden of Eden, and we are giving thanks for more than enough of everything in this abundant life of freedom!

We made a delicious feast for our full time volunteers and special guest on our indoor wood burning stove rather than on the rocket stoves of our sustainable outdoor kitchen. We stayed nice and toasty, had a fantastic meal, AND heated water for showers for super sustainable efficiency. As usual, there was more than enough food for everyone, and we are happy to share our abundance with you!

We made a wonderful vegetarian spread with a gorgeous salad, crispy falafel, purple Thai sticky rice, hearty lentils, and sautéed veggies to share with a special Steemian visitor to the Garden of Eden!

We started our lovely dinner with our daily salad of bright, raw veggies & fruits! We laid a bed of curly dark green kale and topped it with shredded carrots, red and green onions, black beans, sliced strawberries and oranges, feta cheese crumbles, and a sprinkle of sprouted sunflower seeds.

We made crispy round falafel for our meal's main dish. These are made from ground chickpeas mixed with herbs, spices, and garlic, and fried until hot and crunchy. They are excellent just like this!

But we're fancy, so we sprinkled them with a bit of crumbled feta cheese and green onions too!

Falafel are great alone, on salad, or in sandwiches on pita bread! We offered bite sized naan with our meal, and we sprinkled the wee flat breads with parmesan cheese, olive oil, and garlic for extra flavor. To garnish, we set out a dish of green and white onions. We served a delicious creamy tahini yogurt sauce on the side too! This makes an excellent drizzle or dip for the falafel rounds.

We made a delicious side dish of sautéed cabbage, onions, garlic, and mushrooms, and garnished it with bright slices of red and yellow bell pepper for a pretty pop of color and flavor!

We kept the falafel and veggies warm on our wood burning stove while the rest of our dishes finished cooking. Instead of having a knob to adjust the temperature on our stove top, we take care to burn a fire with high enough heat. It takes consideration and practice to know what kind of wood, how much, and what size of it is needed to produce a great cooking fire! We are skilled at using and controlling fire for the purpose at hand because we work with it every single day.

For something that we want to keep warm over "low" heat, we set a brick directly on the stove top then set the dish or pot on top of the brick. This is how we create "burners" with different temperatures on the wood burning stove!

Our day's guest of honor came from across the country to visit us, and we treated him to a fantastic feast. It was beautiful and plentiful, and of course super sustainable!

For another side dish, we made a pot of purple Thai sticky rice and sprinkled it liberally with nutritional yeast and sesame seeds for extra flavor! Nutritional yeast adds lots of B vitamins, protein, and yummy flavor. It is a staple especially for our vegetarians because a sprinkle contains so much nutrition!

For another dish, we made delicious lentils! These are another great vegetarian/vegan dish. Lentils cook faster than beans but have similar taste and texture. They are full of fiber, protein, iron, zinc, and more B vitamins, which are especially important for vegetarians and vegans because animal products are one of the greatest sources of B vitamins but obviously vegetarians and vegans avoid animal products to some extent. We made these with tomatoes, onions, garlic, herbs, and spices.

Do you recognize our special Steem friend guest??

That's right, it's @virtualgrowth!! He FINALLY came to visit the Garden of Eden, and we made sure to feed, feed, feed, feed, feed him! Here he is with our chef du jour, @truelovelives

Our friend @virtualgrowth specifically came to help us celebrate @quinneaker's Angels & Demons birthday party and invested a few extra days at our ecovillage. We shared many nice meals with our dear Steemian on top of our day's fantastic vegetarian spread! Thanks for visiting @virtualgrowth!

Thanks to all who follow our sustainable feast posts - we'll keep sharing the love~*~

Food is important, and we hope to inspire people to really take time to eat, enjoy it, and share it with someone you love. We also hope to inspire more and more sustainable practices in regards to food!

We do all of our cooking over fire, using wood that was otherwise destined to end up in a landfill! This is our indoor wood burning stove in action - it cooks our food, warms our communal space, and heats water for hot showers all at the same time!

How interesting is your post today, with that luxury guest, who could enjoy VIP. all those flavors of his succulent cuisine, and witness first hand how this great organization works, exquisite dishes to share on this gray day. I love falafel, with a chickpea sauce, it looks spectacular, what I said of donating serious items for your boutique, like leather gloves for motorized.
