Cabbage garden, Week #3. Effects of the Tropical Storm Bret.

in #gardening7 years ago (edited)

On Monday, Tropical Storm Bret decided to pay my little island country a visit, quite unusual for us. It caused a lot of devastation and many people suffered great losses. Quite possibly because we don't often get huge storms or hurricanes here so naturally, the population believes the country to be blessed. Luckily I was spared any damages to my home, however, my garden didn't do as well.

On Tuesday, when I visited in the afternoon, this is what greeted me.

Again, I must consider myself lucky, because, while my cabbages were under water, the majority had not gotten washed away or broken. A minor blessing and it could have been a lot worse, I'm quite thankful. Because most of the field was covered in water still, I couldn't fully assess the situation on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, the scene looked a bit better and, despite the situation, I again considered myself lucky. Only a few, I'd guess about 100, of my plants had begun to show signs of rot. Cabbages, and most vegetables, don't do well in saturated conditions.

Below, you can see some of the plants that took a hit.

All in all, it's not a complete loss and maybe with a little bit more tender loving care, I can nurse the field back to health and still make a profit from this. Hope you come along for the journey.

Oh no, I'm so sorry to see this, I was excited about your cabbage adventure! I hope you do manage to keep some of your crops healthy.

It's a possibility. Thanks for the support!

Whoa! That's intense. Maybe plant some watercress in the meantime, I bet it would do well. Hope all your plants make it through the wet spell! I'm a fellow musician and nature lover so I just followed ya.

Water cress xD Thankfully that water did not last long enough for that venture xD

Wow, you are lucky. Maybe those few plants will come back once the soil dries out a little more. Sorry to hear about the devastation in your area though.
