Container Planting Revisited
It has been a while since I posted on my container planting strategy as a means to cope with drought conditions, as well as just having a way to grow your own vegetables in small places
Despite it not being growing season for tomatoes, I placed some seeds in the soil of these containers and supplied water through the wicker basket and they have responded magnificently.
We use a lot of herbs in our cooking and I thought I would try and make a kitchen container with three small units which could sit by a sunny window or on a window sill inside the house so one can grow basic herbs all year round.Below is my first attempt and it definitely seems conceivable. It is the same concept as discussed with all the other containers, just smaller
So I imagine having a rectangular tray with three 'grotainers' placed on it with Coriander, Sweet Basil and Chives or Spring Onions growing in them. Obviously one will need to neaten them up or the women of the house will not have them in her kitchen.
On an aside, some more about the drought. We are still on Level Four restrictions so this is how our water savings work. Besides the 3500 liter water tank which we installed we also harvest water into municipal bins
Down pipe elbowed into municipal bin, and as it fills up we empty into every container we have
This water then gets decanted into bottles which we keep in the bathrooms and toilets to replenish cisterns
Last month was the first time we managed to get a ZERO charge for water usage, and as a family of four adults we used LESS THAN 100 litres a day on average. We are very proud of that fact

Welcome @n-doorplants ..thank you for taking the time to read my blog. I suggest you take the time to do an "Introduce Yourself" post with the tag #introduceyourself as this will get you noticed. I just did a post welcoming some new Steemians... https://steemit.com/welcome/@themagus/welcome-introducing-some-new-steemians-3 ... check it out and start working on your own introduction !!
Thank you for the warm welcome and the suggestions, and links.
I will check them out.
I started container gardening, because if I plant stuff in the yard it's not long before the raccoons come to visit. Now I plant things in 5 gallon buckets on the lanai to keep them safe from wandering paws. I need to get started with it again soon.
@michellerhey thanks for the response. The difference with my system is you never water from the top. The water wicks from the bottom (read Article one) and the plants take up only what they need when ever they need it. Plants never get stressed.
Nice to see this system is producing results!
Great article.. Upvoted and started following you @themagus.. Hope youll visit my page too. Were in a lil bit in a same page of interest I love it when you follow me back.
I do the same in my greenhouse, a very efficient system. I water my plants 3 times a day during warm periods. The boost of growth is easy to see.
I put all the nutrients in the water at the bottom.... have a look at the first article I wrote...using this concept in your greenhouse will produce magnificent results.
This is a good concept and helps to make our environment greener...keep it up
Thank you
welcome
