Produce more food from your garden - utilize secondary edibles

in #gardening5 years ago (edited)

By utilizing the secondary edibles, you can produce far more food from your garden. If you learn what a secondary edible is and begin to grow crops that have them, you can produce far more food in less space. Do you have a small back yard or just limited space in which you can grow food? Secondary edibles will help you produce far more food from that limited space.

So what is a secondary edible? It is an edible part of any plant which can be eaten, but typically is thrown away. Often the leaves which aren't typically prized as food will taste great and have a significant amount of nutrition. The leaves of plants such as broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower are thrown away after the heads are harvested. Instead of waiting months for the heads to be harvested and provide you with a single meal, eat a few of the leaves off of each plant and have meals every week from those plants until the head is ready.

Chances are high that you’ve got plants in your garden which have secondary edibles you can eat. Plants which have secondary edibles can provide you with food every week instead of a meal after growing for a few months. Today we show you how we use secondary edibles from broccoli, cabbage and beets to make a stir fry with a few of the other crops from the garden. It’s a terrific way for those with limited space to grow more food.

My husband grew rainbow chard while I was growing beetroots and I looked at the red chard and wondered why we were growing both, when the beetroot leaves would serve the same purpose as the chard leaves! We often forget that many of our vegetables share a common ancestor, so those broccoli leaves are essentially cabbage leaves.

Some great food for thought here! This post has been featured in the Homesteading – Living Naturally newsletter
