Demystifying Permaculture (Intro to our Radio Show!)

in #gardening6 years ago (edited)

We just finished our first hour long radio show focusing on Permaculture through the Global Homestead Collective's Discord (@ghscollective) and are so stoked!

Permaculture is an ethically based design system that allies with nature in order to create a permanent culture (true sustainability). In an era where "green" consciousness is everywhere, it's important we analyze and understand how our actions and culture affect the Earth and its inhabitants.

For us, this show is an opportunity to demystify permaculture, to make it accessible and unpack some of the headier and complex aspects of this mysterious thing known as permaculture. For this movement to work, we all need to be on board.

In this first episode we introduced ourselves a little bit and laid out the 3 ethics and 12 principles. We wanted to record it, but it didn't work out this time. I think we have a system in place next week to record! These principles are the cornerstones of permaculture. It is not the techniques that make up the framework of permaculture, but the ethics and principles that inform these techniques.

As humans in a changing earthen landscape, we need to be prepared for any shifts that may happen. Permaculture is one such way that we are preparing by creating resilient systems, nurturing local connections (for barter, trade and allyship), and cultivating a harmonious relationship with the earth instead of seeking to dominate or just act like the earth is a backdrop to human life.

By going through the 12 Principles over a 12 week period (show time listed below), we hope to DIG IN and make this language accessible to more people. As we've mentioned before, permaculture is often a thing set aside for people who have time and money to take a certifying course. We want to change that. It's not that we're experts, but we do try to live by these principles and we want to engage other humans into incorporating these thoughts into their lives.

If you have any questions about your life in relation to permaculture -- or ways that you can implement these principles in your lives, we encourage you to message us on Discord or in the comments here. Let's start a conversation. We want to be of service to our community, and that means you!

We're hoping for some audience participation and will be recording future episodes to make it more accessible to those who can't join us from 4-5 CST every Tuesday.

thanks again for the invitation and incentive to do it! it feels awesome <3

Wow, exciting! I'm not sure if I can catch any of your shows (would love to, but I'm happy if I can manage to post this comment). However, next time I got my computer out, I'll post links on your discord to the post I've written on some permaculture principles - these 12 by Holmgren, and others.

We're pretty excited! The hope is that next time we can dial in a recording and then post to dsound so as to make it available to anyone, anytime. Most definitely be interested in checking out your posts and would be interested in having guests, if you're interested ;)

All right, recording radio-shows to make it available for all posterity sounds awesome! Even then, I don't know when I'd get around to listening to them. Maybe when I get "home" in November? Or I guess I could download them and listen at my convenience. As for appearing in them... yes, let's make it happen! The "when" is the trickiest part, as I have no idea about my connectivity in the foreseeable future.
Anywho, here is my series on Permaculture Principles: The first one https://steemit.com/permaculture/@stortebeker/permaculture-a-starting-point is an intro to the series, listing all the principles I wanted to discuss (and link!) in subsequent articles. Since the editing window closes after a week, I had to use a different method to keep the series together: listing previously written posts in my last one: https://steemit.com/permaculture/@stortebeker/permaculture-principles-making-the-most-of-edges
I did get on your discord, but didn't read through the whole thing, so instead of link-dropping in an inappropriate place, I thought I'd just link you these two posts here. Please feel free to make use of them in your radio-show, or wherever it may be useful for you.
Cheers!

So super awesome!! Nice endeavour guys 🌳🌲🌱#permaculture4life

heck YAAA @yogajill. life for permaculture!

When he goes in for the second bite is the best
