Working On Growing A Peach and Pecan Tree

in #gardening7 years ago

My tomato plants are almost gone. Only a few tomatoes remain to be picked but by tomorrow they should all be gone. This cold weather hitting us so early hurt them and their leaves are turning yellow and wilting. My avocado tree has been replanted and relocated to the kitchen to protect it from the cold.

I was getting ready to hang up my gardening tools for the year!

But now I have a new project!!!

Pecan and Peach Trees!

Picture Of My Childhood Pecan Tree

My brother has a lot of edible plants (peach, pecan, and walnut trees, and berries and other neat plants.) He owns my childhood home and I always loved the pecan tree. Pecans are my favorite nut but they are so expensive. I've always wanted my own pecan tree. My brother has some tiny pecan trees grown from pecans from my childhood pecan tree. Digging up the tiny trees would be hard because the roots go so deep. Instead my brother gifted me with some clippings to see if I can get them to grow roots. He also sent along a few peach tree clippings.

My Project For The Coming Weeks

I've been reading up on how to plant cuttings from pecan and peach trees. I've never dealt with cuttings before so I'm just doing what tutorials on the internet tell me to do. I planted around 10 pecan cuttings and 4 peach tree cuttings to see if I can get at least one to grow roots. Nine out of 10 pecan cuttings and three out of four peach cuttings are small (around four inches high).

Large Peach Tree Cutting

I had a large branch from each kind of tree that had some roots at the bottom. Those were pretty large so I stuck them in pots filled with dirt. Since I've never done this before I don't know if anything will grow. I'll be surprised if this experiment works. If I do manage to get roots to grow then the little tree will stay in the nice warm house this winter.

Got My Fingers Crossed!

Anyone out there have advice for dealing with clippings from trees?

Nice, best of luck to you :-)

It is a bit old topic, sorry to bother you.
I am trying to find pecan nuts to start growing a few trees myself, but I can't get them. Our climate is OK for it to grow, but there are no trees (that I know of) around. Do you know if there's a way someone who has it could send me a few nuts? I will gladly pay shipping expenses.

I always loved growing plants. I'm a bamboo nut myself, can't get enough of them. :)

Thank you, and sorry for posting into an old topic. Hope winter is not to hard on you. Cheers!

Where do you live? Since it's winter I don't have any pecans available. The pecan tree in this post failed unfortunately. I'm going to have to get actual nuts instead of using cuttings. I know I've gotten seeds off ebay and etsy before that sprouted plants. Amazon is another site. Since I don't know where you live I can't say.

Slovenia, Central Europe. ☺️

Thank you for your answer. I'll check.

I'm sorry about the pecan tree. I bet you have all kind of memories.

Have a great day!

Nice! We had a pecan tree in Texas. It grew those little pecans and I once cracked them for hours and ended up with two tiny little tubs of nuts. It was not worth it! :) I hope you can get the trees to grow from the cuttings. Keep us posted - I heard trees have to grow from seeds but bushes can grow from cuttings. We live in Panama and you can just put sticks in the ground and they will grow. We have a lot we are trying to get to take root!! Thanks for the post!

From what I've read this season from our gardeners is that willow has root propagating qualities. Since we get aspirin from willow, that might work in a pinch. If you can get your hands on some willow cuttings, though, seems to be the best way. Obviously, I'm just passing on hearsay, but it must have some truth to it because so many folks recommend it.

Good luck! Maybe in the future, you'll be writing about the peachy pecan ice cream you just made. ;~D

My fingers crossed for you! Good luck my dear friend @marxrab! Have a great Sunday.
