Farm Update: Finished Terraces with Happy Birds

With a lot of help from our friend @pauliepro things have really started moving here, literally, in the form of boulders, dirt and birds. With some help from John, he built the terraces featured in this post and they moved the birds to them after covering them with peat moss to start adding nutrients to the soil directly in the form of waste.

Here's whats left of the pile of boulders that he used to build the terraces.

Happy ducks in their new spots. The way this ended up being arranged made it so all the birds have a different but clear view to the bay.

At this point, all the birds have now been moved, which is becoming easier as we terrace the hill and make flatter areas for gardening and bird tractors.

If you've ever wondered how permaculturists farm mountaintops, this is it.

this is so cool

What a hard and wonderful job! You guys did great! I love your chicken tractors and your birds are beautiful, especially the Muscovy! Thank for Sharing! Following now to see future updates!

The muscovy are sassy but beautiful. We've got a kind hearted big male muscovy that has my heart. We actually harvested some much more agressive smaller ones that were mean to the girls and Hugo (the big male) to keep him around. I like the idea of my duck ladies hanging out with a gentleman who isn't just gonna rip out their tail feathers and step on them hahaha.

I got lucky with 5 girls! all sweet!

Such ingenuity! Those birds are living the life. Where's my view of the bay huh? Great post!

Really awesome Idea! I've been looking at some properties with steep sections that I've wondered what I could do with and this gets my wheels turning! Did you guys need to use a tractor for this or did you do it by hand? And how much did it cost? I feel like that's something we always want to know... will it fit in our budget.

There is no room for equiptment between the boulders, all done by hand. But once it's done it's done, none of our terraces have ever collapsed...we amend the soil occasionally but that's it.

Terracing is a lot of hard work, but it will definitely be worth it when you get it all finished. There's something about looking at a completed project and seeing all the progress you've made that makes a person feel really good! Keep up the good work!

Great Progress guys, keep em coming :)
