Bonsai Rose Bush: Training Plants to Do Wierd Things

in #gardening7 years ago

So this rose looks nothing like it did when it first opened, which is pretty cool. It's pollinated and nearly died off now, so I took some pictures of the flower and of the training I've done to my roses in general, by means of pinching and bending the branches.

Like tomato plants and cannabis plants, roses love to be twisted and bent. The entire concept of bonsai is built on training slow growing plants with these techniques.

Every time a branch grows tall, I pinch and bend it over like shown in these photos.

So long as you do this without actually snapping the stem, you'll have results like this, bending branches that reach back up to the sun. It'll get knobby there, creating a stronger point.

Awesome tip! Are the stems that bendy? I'm afraid of breaking 'em.🌹

Beep beep. Hi @erikaharris!
You have used tip! in your comment - that`s my magic word for sending tips ;)

Most stems are bendy if you prepare em...which really is just pinching them between your fingers(careful to keep nails out of the equation, that's how you prune away branches and leaves). You'll feel the stem squish and soften. I squeeze it on every side until it's kinda darkened and the branch generally just lays over. By the end of the day, it's turned it's top up towards the sky, bends be damned :D

But we've been doing this for years on everything from cannabis to tomatoes, certain plants thrive with some abuse it seems, others wither and die. Just like people ha.

Ah, thanks for such a thorough reply! I know your plate is mega-full, but you could give some awesome tutorials for Steemit... vids (for DTube!) showing demos of planting techniques, fermentation, chicken tending, glassblowing, etc.

I hear you on the plate, it got so full I had to get 12 more lol.

We've considered it, I've just not decided how I wanna do that stuff yet though

Very nice. You should consider planting the rose bush in a shallower pot and opening up the structure of the plant for your eye can flow with the trunk movement as there is a lot of branches its some what confusing to the eye.

Hey thanks for the suggestion on such an old post! I still have this rose bush, maybe I'll do what you suggested

Excellent post, I like what you do still, greetings
