RE: Sunflowers: The Cheerful Cover Crop, Nutritious Food & Bringer of Joy
Every year I try to grow sunflowers. Usually it's the squirrels that clean them out. One year I got them before the squirrels, but they molded when I hung them to dry. High humidity here... This year the chipmunks ate the sprouts, so I only have 5 flowering. Whether I get any seeds is left to be seen...
I think someone is eating our corn so I know what you mean about critters. They are so sneaky. I read someone puts flower sacks or old feed bags around hers to protect them. Not sure if that is worth the trouble though.
When I raised corn, I put pantyhose over each ear. The raccoons just pulled it off....it was tied on.
oh my goodness! That is crazy! thank goodness for our dogs. They do a marvellous job of keeping the critters at a reasonable level although I think they've been sleeping on the job with the corn. We've had early frost so I have very low hopes for all of our lovely remaining corn. :(
