Visit to an Autumn Meadow: ColorChallenge Yellow
Not a bright yellow, but a golden autumnal yellow. The bright reds and yellows and oranges have yet to arrive to this spot at Longwood Gardens near Philadelphia, PA. You can just make out the beginning of the changes at the tops of the trees in the distance.
But it was the aging yellowing of the meadow that struck me!

I was lucky to be able to visit Longwood Gardens last saturday. Longwood is situated on 1,077 acres and is known for its floral displays, varied mature trees, traditional hardscapes, conservatory, holiday lights,....and this fabulous meadow.
Unfortuantely for us, we arrived just after they had de-nuded all the annual beds, and there were dozens of workers busily planting 250,000 spring bulbs. 250,000! That is going to be one helluva display!!!!
There were a few perennial beds still in flower as seen below. The apricot is 'Sheffield Daisy'(a perennial chrysanthemum), the yellow is dahlia, and the purple is ageratum.
But it was the meadow that caught my fancy. The spring and summer must certainly be terrific with everything in bloom and the birds and butterflies flitting about, but the autumn seed pods and yellowing stalks made for a peaceful scene. Interspersed were an occasional splash of red or yellow, and here and there were some birdhouses. The newly built boardwalk paths and bridges added to the serenity. It's hard to tell from the photos, but there are paths mowed all through this space. Just a wonderful spot.

The fields are gorgeous against the pure blue sky. I once had the opportunity to see the Longwood Gardens. It was spectacular! I can imagine that next spring those beds are going to be amazing. I hope you go back to share photos with us. ;-)

I think if anyone would appreciate the effort to plant 250,000 bulbs, it would be you! What's the most that you have planted in one job? I bet it's quite a few! I hope you get to see their display next spring.
Last fall we planted 20,000 total! 10,000 were at one property. Not sure what this year's count is.
Here's the secret...use an electric drill with a a 6" augur!! Saves wrist pain from manual digging!!
