Rosemary 'bonsai' follow up

in #gardening8 years ago

It's been about to 6 months since I've started these. Out of the 4, only 2 survived.

This is how they looked 6 months ago.

First one.

Gave it a trim and reshaped it.

Second one didn't turn out quite as nice; I kinda got carried away and removed way too many leaves/sideshoots.

I'll have to think of something else to do with it; the branches are still green so I'll be able to bend them for a while.

Thanks!

Interesting! I hadn't really thought about using rosemary for bonsai. I have a big rosemary plant in a pot that I have thought about doing some shaping to. I think it's to big to train to any certain shape by wiring it.

I don't know how it's going to work out either, just a bit of fun I guess. Yeah, I have quite a few rosemary bushes around; I quite like the plant.

very nice. Just keep in mind that your trees are still young and the amount of wire you applied may just kill it. In the summer the wire gets very warm and burns the tree. So place it in a cooler place.

Thanks for the tip! At the moment these plants are kept inside and the only sun hitting the directly is the afternoon one. Never played with shaping plants with wires before so never thought about the temp rising because of that, thanks!

My sister worked at a bakery once. They grew the rosemary into this fantastic spiral topiaries. It was very convenient for the cooks to snap off a little sprig off the side suckers whenever they needed it. I have a one growing in the ground in my garden, and it has developed to a size now that I am starting to think about how I want to shape it. First I am training it to have a strong, thick trunk at the base, then I might start twisting it around about 8 inches up. I would worry about weakening the trunk near the base too much, because if it snaps, it might not regrow so easily unless it has a very strong, healthy root system.

Good luck. This is the first I have seen photos of someone trying something fun like this with rosemary. I saw living "trees" someone had made out of lavender for sale at a grocery store. Had no idea that was even possible.

Thank you!

Ooooh, spiral ones, that sounds fun! I've got quite a few rosemary plants outside so I might just play with an existing one.
What I aspire to do is replace all my hedges with rosemary bushes and just trim those into the hedge shape; that'd be way better/cooler than the useless hedge bushes :D
My inlaws have a giant topiary/tree shaped rosemary bush. It is about 15 years old. The trunk is made from a few different branches that were twisted around eachother and fused into a single one after all the years. It also has a metal bar supporting it. It's kinda shaped like a Christmas three, about 5 feet tall.
