Growing carrots all year round - Late May Bunty's Blog episode
Growing carrots can be successful all year round in the UK. Today I pulled out the last of the 2017 sown carrots as they were going to seed (see pic above). They were sown in July 2017 and took until October to grow fully but then kept well in the soil all winter until April/May when they begin to root and go to seed.
A little tip when trying to use these old carrots is to soak them in water once picked, this generally helps them to taste fresher and have a better texture.
In February once a little sun started to warm the polytunnel we sowed some carrots and they are now coming to fruition.
These smaller but extremely tasty carrots will keep us going until the main crop are ready, probably in July. They were sown in late April and have been under environmesh (a protecting cover protecting against root flies).
I gave them a little weed 2 weeks ago but the warm weather means more weeding is needed and this time I'm gonna weed by hand!!
Daaadaaaaa!!
As you can see - some nice clean rows of young carrots ready to keep us in stock throughout the summer. We grow things in rows like this so that it is easy to weed quickly with a draw hoe, more on this another time. Bunty's blog has a new episode out, she looks at the carrots and sows more seed in-between the germinated carrot plants. I might do the same in the coming days.
Wow this is a very informative write on carrots.
Amazing how they survived that long underground, and still look, and taste fresh.
