Garden – Adapting to the new climatesteemCreated with Sketch.

in #garden7 years ago

Two years ago our garden looked something like this

Decent lawn and herb garden surrounded by an Australian rosemary hedge, with a lavender side. Two years of drought has taken it’s toll, and the garden now looks like this.

Hedge has succumbed to disease, and the lawn is now a dust bowl

The only watering allowed is using gray water and that only twice a week

We resolved over the next three months to make our back garden more water friendly and as a start decided to extend my ‘positive pit’, a place where I relax in the evenings usually with a cold beverage and a book

We removed all the old onion grass roots and leveled the area in preparation to putting cement blocks in. Thereafter we placed some cloth down and placed the pavers in rows.

Now that looks straight forward but clearing the area and manipulating those pavers again and again was back breaking work, especially as the temperatures were in the early 90’s Fahrenheit.
Next we placed white stone chips in between the pavers and placed a row of gray paving bricks across the front.

In the summer this whole area is in shade in the afternoon so we will be able to entertain here.

Yours truly having a well earned drink with a very tired and aching back

Thanks for reading.

I wish I could send you some of our rain. It's raining yet again and a tropical cyclone is supposed to be hitting the country overnight. Up north, there is already bad flooding and the storm hasn't hit yet.
But in the absence of rain, good job starting to make some changes to accommodate how things are. That looks like a nice, relaxing spot.
I hope your back has recovered!

@kiwideb, we are a month into our rainy season with less than 10 mm's received. It is indeed a pleasant spot, as the birds play and sing above my head ...sometimes with an interesting deposit in my vicinity ...lol... and I can watch the bats chase insects at dusk.
edit: I hope the cyclone did not do too much damage :(

After all the media frenzy, it was a non-event. We had some rain overnight (and it's raining again quite heavily now), but it's rained nearly constantly all spring, summer and autumn, so nothing new. And it blew a bit this morning, but Wellington is always windy. And we can't even find anything severe that's happened elsewhere in the country. So I think we can say it's business as normal. Except that it's a public holiday!
And speaking of holidays, I'll be looking out for your Tom post :-)

ooooh
good work
congratulations

Thank you ...
