Weeds

in #garden6 years ago

Weeds are a constant in a garden. And yes, many weeds are wonderful and good and edible. But some are straight out annoying.

They might produce seedpods that stick to all your clothing, hurt when you step on it or bore into dogs or cats running through the yard and cause a big problem.

Of course, as far as the particular plant is concerned, it is genius! It makes sure to spread its species wide and far.

As far as the dog, cat, or foot is concerned, it hurts. And it is no fun.

So, getting rid of weeds is a ongoing fun projects for any gardener.

Now, in permaculture, we see the value in everything that grows - even in the much hated Bermuda grass or even the Johnson grass. It is a bit hard to love them, but we try.

But that doesn’t mean that we just let them do whatever they want to do.

Suppressing them is one way to get rid of the invasion. Cardboard, newspaper, feed sacks are some of the items I use to lay down as a weed surpressant.

This works for most weeds, for Bermuda grass it is more of a challenge on how to overcome it best. But here is what I found.

I put down the cardboard, wet it to make it contour to the ground, then add a nice layer of mulch on top. Usually, whatever grows through those layers pulls out quite easily.

One of the benefits of that method is that with time, the solid becomes very nice and fertile.

Most weeds don’t like that kind of soil. They like the kind they need to repair with their presence - but that is a topic for another day…

Bermuda grass is our most prevalent weed, along with Potentilla reptans... We usually fill a 25 liter bucket with roots out of 1 sqm... and that's in our cultivated beds!

Weeds weeds weeds. Weedy weedy weeds. Another way to deal with some weeds is to eat them. Some are yum!

For Bermuda grass though, I think you'll need violence and bombs and gasoline and fire.

hahaha - yes, Violence is in order. But if you get the soil soft and such, you can just pull and pull and pull - highly satisfying if a 4-foot long root of Bermuda just comes up. And believe you me. We eat lots of weeds LOL

A friend told me that he used to sell the dried Bermuda grass roots as a Chinese medicine to make tea with. One of those days I will try it

Ooh, I've not heard of that one!

I've been pulling Johnson grass in my best mulched bed the last few days and the ease of pulling is incredible. Whereas pulling it in the other places is kinda like pulling weeds...
