Destiny 2: Review for the Lone WolvessteemCreated with Sketch.

in #gaming7 years ago (edited)

For the last 2 weeks I have been playing Destiny 2. The game is getting good reviews and I can only confirm that Bungie have stepped up their game with their sequel. It is time for some reviews but with a difference.

Me, myself and I

Destiny 2 has a variety of activities, most of these activities require you to work together with some friends or clan mates. But I have been doing things a little different. I have been going at it solo to find out how far I can get without any help. So what has Destiny 2 to offer for those without a wolf pack?

The main storyline

Destiny 1 is famous for its story or rather the lack of. It is a bit of a contradiction because the story behind Destiny is very rich, the problem is that the story wasn't presented in the game but on grimoire cards that were only accessible on the Bungie site.
With Destiny 2 Bungie totally turned things around, the grimoire cards are gone and the game now has engaging cut scenes detailing what is going on.
The Story starts with the powerful Homecoming Story, an explosive start that showcases Bungie's desire to let you know that Destiny 2 is not going to be like Destiny 1.
As a solo player you can keep yourself well occupied with the story missions called the Red War. It took me 2 days to complete the story line, as a seasoned Destiny player I had no troubles finishing the main story.

I actually liked playing the complete story line solo better than with a fire team because this gave me the opportunity to explore this new world at my own pace.

I played through the original Destiny main story with my friends and we rushed the entire thing. I actually had to replay the story mission again just to know what actually happened.

You might think that playing through the main story line seems short but with Destiny the main story missions are just a prologue of things to come. When you finish the main story it just means that you are just at the beginning of your adventure.

Open World

After you've finished the main story line you can go and visit the worlds of Titan, IO, Nessus and Earth (Earth dead Zone). The worlds are now more "open world" than the original Destiny. You will find that it is more fun to just explore. There always seems to be something going on.
Just wandering and exploring now is more rewarding unlike in Destiny 1) and chances are you will just hop from one firefight to another.
For the solo player this set up is perfect. there are numerous activities spread around and always helpful guardians in the neighborhood ready to to help you take some baddies down.
You can probably spend days just exploring the worlds and finding interesting hidden locations (and loot!)

Adventures

When you open the director (navigation screen) you will get a view of the map of the world you are on. On this map you will see all the activities that are available.
One of those activities is called "adventures". To activate an adventure just go to the spot on the map with the adventure symbol and activate the adventure. The adventure will activate and a narrated story mission will commence. Adventures are not hard and can easily be done solo.
Depending on the planet you will find about 6 - 10 scattered around.

Quests

Quest are a little harder than Adventures. Quests are a series of narrated missions you have to complete. Going solo on the Quests will be much harder than Adventures but it is not impossible. Finishing a Quest will also give you some sweet rewards. The Quests will also take longer to finish than a mission. There is one Quest available on each planet.

Lost Sectors

When you are cruisin' for a bruisin' you might see some mysterious symbols carved on a building or rock. These symbols indicate that there is a lost sector (read dungeon) around. To enter the Lost Sector you will have to descend into some underground area where a Boss character and his minions await you. Finishing them off solo will take some effort but again, not impossible. When you finish off the boss a loot chest will appear with some nice loot inside.

Public events

At time of writing Public events are very popular because you can get good loot and you you level up faster. So you don't have to worry that when you enter a public event that you will be alone.
You can now see when and where a public event will start. Even if you are early you can "rally to the flag" and chill in the area waiting for the public event to start. Even if you have no clue what you are doing you can always depend on your fellow guardians to carry you and in most cases trigger the Heroic event (which means more nice loot).

Patrols

The actual patrols are much like those in Destiny 1, but in Destiny 2 they seem less of a chore because there is so much going one while you are completing them. There is nothing complicated here just go from beacon to beacon completing uncomplicated tasks. By doing Patrols you will discover a lot of the unexplored worlds.

Strikes

Strikes are (usually) 3 man missions where you are matched with two other guardians. Strikes are also a kind of preparation for the Raid, a lot of the mechanics that are in strikes tend to make a return in the Raid. Strikes can be tough, now more than ever because in Destiny 2 there are more mechanics (puzzles) than before. It is also possible to go Solo on a Strike but unless you have a high light level it's going to be a long difficult battle. The Boss fights especially are going to be very challenging.

Crucible

This is the PvP section of the game. Take on other guardians in Quick play or competitive mode.
You can take part in the Crucible alone but chances are that in competitive mode you will be destroyed by the clan fireteams. It is better to stick to the Quick play unless you have the skills to carry your 4 man team to victory.

The Takeaway

Destiny 2 has a lot to offer for the solo players, there are a lot of activities and worlds to explore. Even if you don't want to team up there is a lot to keep you occupied. The only things you are gonna miss out on are the end game activities like the Raid, Trials of the nine or the Nightfall.
Bungie has lowered the difficulty level and increased the ways to level up. You can keep soloing it for a long time before you reach the point that you have to connect to your friends and form a fireteam.
Destiny 2 is more friendly and forgiving towards the casual player.

Are you a lone wolf or part of a wolf pack? Let me know in the comment section.

I think i saw an ad for this watching football yesterday

Destiny 2 is very popular, a lot of people didn't expect that the publisher Bungie could right the wrongs from the first Destiny. But they came through and perfected their franchise. It's less hardcore but more enjoyable and accessible now.

@xervantes daammmn this looks fun!
Ive never been a fan of destiny1 ,but the open world theme implemented now could make it alot more enjoyable :D
Thanks for sharing mate.

Yeah, I've been having a blast. Kinda gives me less time for Steemit though :) Bungie really listened to the community and changed things around for Destiny 2.

Tbh i didnt really enjoy destiny 1 but i am looking forward to destiny 2 especially the pvp i like this a lot. i resteemed it and upvoted it and followed thank you for this

You'll like what they did with PVP, I will focus on my next review on the Crucible. Spoiler... It's more balanced and the 4vs4 was the right choice.

I've always been a lone Wolf. That's awesome they extended the game play. Thanks for the review

The end game activities require you to team up but I found that you don't really need it. You can have a great time just running around as a lone wolf and have a great time.

It is fine to play solo sometimes, but that new raid is mad. Finally beat Calus (boss).

I think I am going to do the raid next weekend. Looking forward to it, I hear it's quite good.

I am yet to get this game

It's very good, takes up a lot of your time though :)
