in #gaming7 years ago (edited)

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered will finally be sold as a standalone game. Until now the Remastered version has been bundled with the Legacy, Legacy Pro and Digital Deluxe-editions of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare.

The Humble Beginnings

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is the fourth installment in the Call of Duty series. It was released in 2007 for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3. Prior to the release of Modern Warfare, the Call of Duty series always had a World War II theme. But with Modern Warfare Activision introduced the players to a modern day setting.
Call of Duty 4 : Modern Warfare was a big hit with both the gaming community and critics. The game got praise for the thrilling story and the smooth gameplay.
Two of the most memorable moments in Modern Warfare are experienced in the "All Ghillied Up" mission and the "aftermath" mission.

For me especially Aftermath had a wtf moment comparable with the Psycho Mantis battle in Metal Gear Solid (Look this one up if you don't know it!).

As of 2017 Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare has a sold a total of 17.24 million copies. In comparison, its predecessor Call of Duty 3 has sold 6.45 million copies (source) since its release in 2006.

The Triumphant return?

9 years later after the release of Call of Duty 4 and a whole lot of Call of Duty titles later, Activision decided to remaster the game that ignited the incredible sales figures for the Call of Duty series.
This was probably also fueled by the decline in sales after Activision changed the setting for Call of Duty to a more futuristic one in Call of Duty: advanced Warfare.
The arrival of the remastered version was highly anticipated by the gaming community. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is by many considered to be the best in the series.

But then Activision decided to do something that pissed of their entire playerbase.
Apparently someone at Activision thought that it would be a good idea to bundle the Remastered version of Modern Warfare with their upcoming release Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare (again set in a futuristic setting) and to make things worse, the remastered version of Modern Warfare was only bundled with the more expensive editions.
So now Call of Duty fans had to pay at least $80 to play the Remastered version of Modern Warfare.

The thing was that not many people were excited about the futuristic setting of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and it felt like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered was used to boost the sales of Infinite Warfare.

And sure enough the internet exploded!
Enraged gamers protested against Activision's decision by disliking the reveal trailer for Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare on Youtube. The reveal trailer received over 3 million dislikes, becoming one of the most disliked videos ever on the site.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare is the worst selling Call of Duty title since Activision released Call of Duty 4 in 2007. In comparison, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (2011) has sold over 30 million copies while Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare barely managed to sell 12 million copies.

Is it too late?

The question remains if Activision can repair their mistake? It has been 10 years since the launch of Modern Warfare and there a lot of excellent first person shooters available at the moment (Battlefield 1 for instance).

So who is still waiting for the triumphant return of the (Re)Master? Let me know in the comment section.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered (standalone version) will be available on June 27 for Playstation 4. The PC and Xbox versions are expected to be released one month later (still unconfirmed).

Rumor has it that the remaster is going to be 40 bucks. That's ridiculous! Fuck activation milking the shit out of fans any way they can. first as the 80 dollar bundle. then the stupid re release of maps for 15 bucks and now this 40 dollar remaster. the game is 10 years old for eff sake's. I honestly think people should not support this behavior.

So its safe to say that Activision messed up big time. Would you consider buying it if they lowered the price to $20? Or has activision finally killed the series for good with their actions?

oh hell yeah. I would 20 sounds fair in terms of price, but at this point I would not buy it just because I don't want to support a company that does all of those things. I would have to see an effort to change like EA
