Mike Tyson's puchout, the original Dark Souls bosses

in #gaming5 years ago

Let me start by saying I never beat Mike Tyson possibly because I was only 5 years old when Mike Tyson's Punch-Out was released on the NES in 1987. How ever I did play a fair amount and remember knocking out Don Flamingo, king hippo, and struggling with Bald Bull. Lets skip ahead 30 years I walk into a retro game shop in Japan and they let you try to beat Iron Mike (via the code)to get your name and picture on the wall. I gave it a go and all I could think about was how much it was like fighting a dark souls boss. Lasting about how long I lasted the first time I fought Ornstein and Smough, (mike.jpgmaybe 30 seconds) I realized Its all about timing, distance, and pattern recognition with almost no margin for error. Dark Souls has more quite a bit more layers built in but it doesn't make the fight more challenging because stripped down to their basics the process to succeed is the same. Just maybe my love for the Souls games was embedded into me at an early age from the original Dark Souls bosses like Iron Mike himself.
