RE: TotalBiscuit - My thoughts on Quake Champions

in #gaming8 years ago (edited)

I think you do actually get a small cut of profits when you resteem by the way. Also upvotes also can reward you as well. And TotalBiscuit still gets the ad revenue from sharing the post. Also its objectively untrue that you gain nothing from posting on reddit, twitter and facebook. Reddits karma is worth real world money.

Sort:

Resteeming doesn't give you any profit.

Yes - upvotes give you curation rewards - no doubt. And the few hundrets of a cent he will get of the few dozen views (at max) steemit will bring to his video are nothing to the possible rewards you could get from this.

Resteeming can attract more people too me which raises my future profits by a large amount actually. Its the same logic for reddit, twitter and facebook. actually.

Reddit karma is worth real world money to people who know how to sell accounts.

I know a lot of people who make a living by networking on Facebook and Twitter. Having a following on any social media has a substantial monitary value to it.

The corporations that own reddit, twitter and Facebook profit off of shared content. So your argument about this being different on those platforms is objectively false. In those cases its actually even worse because the person who posted the content isn't even earning profit, a third party who owns the page does. Post a video on Facebook can earn Facebook thousands of dollars.

By your logic aggregation is morally wrong which is objectively false. A huge aspect of the internet is aggregation. I cited the original author in the tittle.

By your logic YOU SHOULD NOT be doing lets play videos. You are stealing from the game developers. Making video games takes years and years of effort and your 8 - 12 minute video can make you far more profit than the devs made for that same amount of time. Delete all of your lets plays right now you self proclaimed thief.

Seriously YOU CANNOT be doing lets plays if you think my two paragraphs was insufficient content for a 30 minute video. As a game developer who has worked countless hours on making game content, I demand you take your lets play videos down.

Or you can admit your moralist argument is pretty weak and get over yourself.

Man I can see you're angry - that totally wasn't my intention - sorry about that.

I guess we just can't agree on this one. I have my point of view and you have yours. And that's fine.

Cheers and happy Steeming - wish you luck with your future posts and lots of profit.

Take your lets play videos down. By your logic you are a thief. You also have to refute my other points.

How is it different to post a link on facebook, twitter and reddit when the only difference is WHO makes the money? Explain to me right now.

man - you obviously won't be willing to listen to my arguments.

And you proclaiming me a thief isn't an argument.

But here it goes:
Posting a link to most types of social media - the ones that aren't like steemit - doesn't provide YOU with any monetary gain. Yes it does for the corporations running them - but they aren't the ones who put the link there.
Here it's YOU making the money. That's the difference.

When it comes to let'splay - you inputted the time of playing the game into making the video - that's the work you did, not the developer.

It provides the owner of the social media with 100% of the profits. To make the argument that its morally ok for Mark Zuckerberg to make the money instead of me is beyond weak.

That is one of the worst moral arguments I have ever heard!!! And by your logic you should not be making money off of your lets play videos. Like you seriously should be giving 100% of the profits to Mark Zuckerberg.

Dude.

Tell me your argument why I shouldn't be making money of my letsplays.
You haven't made a single argument yourself and your ways of dismissng my arguments is just - that's stupid. And that's not an argument.

And yes it does provide the social media owner with 100% of the profit. But not YOU. If it was Mark Zuckerberg sharing TBs videos - that would be wrong as well.

By your logic, you are not providing sufficient effort to make money from your lets play videos. I dont agree with this stance because its stupid but BY YOUR LOGIC the above is true.

Also I made multiple arguments all refuting your points.

  1. Facebook, twitter and reddit make money off of posting content. I do not agree that its different at all on who the is the one making the profits. People who aggregate should be allowed to make money too.

  2. Even if you don't directly profit from sharing content you can still benefit greatly from building a following. Sharing content either by resteem or sharing on youtube does contribute to a larger following.

  3. Aggregation is an extremely important aspect of the internet. Sharing content is 100% fine provided you site the original author.

  4. Two paragraphs for 30 minutes of content is a subjective and arbitrary amount. Meaning that some people may think 2 paragraphs as being sufficient while others will not. By this line of reasoning you either need to accept that this is a gray area or that your input is not subjective based on some kind of criteria. Be careful because your lets play videos are subjected to those same rules!

So anyway, you also just lied when you said I didn't state any arguments. For a moralist you seem to be ok with that kind of behavior.

I am trying to decide if I should make a video out of this or not now. I view your argument as being super toxic in a lot of ways. Moralists don't always practice what they preach. And you appear to really be confused about the topic.

You do realize that Twitter makes money from your traffic right? Also you do realize that your argument about my 2 paragraphs not being enough for 30 minute video as being insufficient as being subjective right?

So if we start to dive into the details of this kind of debate things fall apart very quickly. For example, I can ask total biscuit about this myself.

I'm certainly not going to stop you from making a video about this if that is what you want to do.
And I'm not saying my argument is perfect. But I do honestly believe that using others peoples content for personal profit is wrong. And that's the argument I'm making.

You - as a private entity - shouldn't be using others people's content for your own personal gain unless you alter it in an enough significant way that it becomes vastly different.

And yes I do realize that.

And sure ask TB about it, he might even say he doesn't care and I'll be completely fine with that.

Lets open this up to a larger audience. Because this debate is important and I have a feeling a lot of people might have opinions on this.

Me personally, if Mark Z makes money off the content its literally no different than the person posting it making the money. I don't even understand how that makes any sense to see it any other way.
