Retro Review - Syphon Filter (Playstation)
Syphon Filter was released in 1999 for the Sony Playstation. It was a third person stealth shooter.
It was similar to Metal Gear Solid in the way that sneaking around was the method of take down rather than all out fire fighting.
You played as special agent Gabriel Logan who with the help of Lian Xing was responsible for trying to take down an international terrorist.
Gabriel Logan had a large array of weapons at his disposal, from rocket launchers to machine guns.
My favourite had to be the air taser. At first I didn't realise you had to hold down square to use it and I thought it was the worse weapon ever as it just looked like it was shooting out silly string, but once I discovered how stupid I was being I found out what a great weapon it was.
I remember it not working on guards with body armour.
You could also collect body armour to boost your health by allowing you to take more damage.
As with every game of this genre there are numerous bosses along the way. One that sticks out is the battle with a helicopter, which reminds me of the Hind D fight in Metal Gear Solid.
I remember playing this game and being extremely impressed by both the gameplay and storyline. Yes it had elements borrowed from Metal Gear and Golden Eye but it was also an original story line and felt different to both these games.
As Syphon Filter went on to become an extremely successful game, Sony commissioned the studio to make a sequel (Syphon Filter 2) which was released in 2000.
The studio went on to release Syphon Filter 3 in 2001 and 2 spin offs for the PSP in 2006 and 2007.

:o Great game :D I liked the first 2 installments although the Siphon Filter 3 did not like me much

I never did get around to playing this. I was too busy trying to figure out how to not die in Die Hard Trilogy.
