Monday Memories #3 - The Nintendo Game Boy 🎮👦

in #gaming7 years ago (edited)

The Game Boy was released by Nintendo in April 1989 (Japan). It was an 8 bit handheld video games device. It was created and published by Satoru Okada and Nintendo Research & Development.

The Game Boy was a massive success. It's gaming competitors at the time were the Game Gear, which was created by Sega and the Atrai Lynx.

The Game Boy and the Game Boy Color combined went on to sell over 118 million units worldwide.

It took small game cartridges inserted in the top of the device.

No Game Boy was complete without Tetris, that catchy music has become synonymous with the Game Boy. Who would of thought you could have hours of fun stacking coloured bricks on top of each other.

(That Tetris music is going to be with me all day now)

The Game Boy was pretty simple by design, having only four buttons. These were A, B, SELECT, and START, and also a directional pad.

There was also a contrast knob on the side, which I remember I always had to crank to maximum to see what was going on.

Another game available at launch along with Tetris was Super Mario Land. Like Super Mario Bros this was a side scroller with pretty similar gameplay. It was the first Mario game available on a handheld and it was definitely a nice addition to the handheld market.

Alleyway was another game available at launch. It was basically a copy of Breakout, with if I remember correctly a bonus level with Mario in. (I could have dreamt this)

I think I might still have mine somewhere, I'll have to dig it out and see if it still works.

Did anyone else own a Game Boy or one of it's successors? If you did what are your thoughts?

As usual thanks for listening

I don't think I've ever got to play the Nintendo Game Boy.

I do remember playing my Game Boy Advance and Game Boy Advance SP. My favorite game was mega man. I would always play that game. It was sooooo much fun.

Thanks for the comment. Mega Man was a classic. I use to love The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap on the Game Boy Advance.
