¡Greetings to the Steemit community today! Especially for those hardcore videogamers like me! I’m starting today a series of reviews, analyzing successful games from the extremely gorgeous PlayStation 2 console with one of the most iconic hack ‘n slash subgenre games, full of adrenaline and introducing an awesome protagonist, one of the most bad-ass characters ¡EVER! ¡Dante himself! ¡No more, no less! Indeed, we are talking about Devil May Cry, a series created by Capcom that was destined to become one of our favorites. Before reviewing the games themselves, I consider necessary to make a little introduction of all this Devil May Cry Project implied: its origins, what was it about, which was the outcome, and so on.

HISTORY

Game development started back in 1998, after Capcom finished their highly acclaimed Resident Evil 2. Capcom decided to make a game about Resident Evil too, but in a different context. Under the preliminary name “Team Little Devil”, the project started to get shape, even with the work team travelling to Spain in order to consider some castles and other locations to set the game there.

It was already stablished that Dante would be the main character’s name. However, in this early stage, ¡Dante would be a human cop in charge of investigating a series of eerie sightings and weird reports on those castles! During the pre-production stage, during the prototype analysis, Capcom decided to completely change the project’s goal, keeping just some little things from the initial ideas, creating after that what we know as Devil May Cry.

SYNOPSIS

Dante, alongside his twin brother Vergil, are the sons of the Demon Knight Sparda, who conceived them with his human wife Eva. Dante dedicated his life to be a demon hunter (even being a half-demon) calling his demon killing agency “Devil May Cry” naming the game franchise as well. ¡cool! While Vergil went deeper in his demonic side, learning about dark arts and magic.

With his Rebellion blade and his twin handguns called “Ebony” and “Ivory” Dante fights the demons having different goals on each game of the franchise (on every post I will explore with more detail those objectives).

The game focuses on the classic “good vs. evil” formula, ¡but the cynical, unconcerned attitude of Dante makes him look like the anti-hero! Dante and his twin fight each other several times in the games, each one of them with their own motives, but they sometimes show subtle signs of fondness for each other, which is very cool in my humble opinion.

RECEPTIVITY

It’s not a secret that Devil May Cry has been a huge success. ¡It has sold more than ten millions of copies worldwide! On top of that, every game of the series has received a platinum trophy for being a top seller. We could actually say that Devil May Cry has updated by itself the hack n’ slash game genre. The term refers to a game where one of more main characters fend off massive amounts of enemies with a sword or other type of bladed weapon. While the genre itself already existed (¿remember the super classic Golden Axe from SEGA?) it was Devil May Cry who brought it back to the gaming scene, serving as a platform to new, awesome games like, for instance, God of War.

Dante in particular, and Devil May Cry as a whole, have being received in such a good way that we can even find them in another media types: anime, novels, toys, and Dante and other characters from the game appearing in videogames out from the Devil May Cry series, such as Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne.

ENDING THOUGHTS

¡Capcom had a huge success with Devil may Cry! ¡Awesome characters, a flawless script, outstanding graphics and music, great gameplay and a control response God worthy! It is, indeed, a well-made game. Personally, I didn’t like the fifth game, the reboot called DMC. It’s not bad either, is just that I feel some of Devil May Cry’s charm was lost on the process of making such reboot.

Thanks a lot for reading this post. Next time we will review Devil May Cry games one by one. Greetings, and thank you again!
