My top choices of indie games that I am supporting. Part 1

in #gaming7 years ago

Hello

Steem.it !!!!!!!!

This is my first video game post, well second if you include my introduction post.

I am going to be doing a series of posts about games that I wish more people checked out. I am going to be talking about the problems with making a game as a indie dev and the comparisons to a triple AAA budget.

There is a ton of games out there on the internet that do not get a big triple AAA marketing.

As you can see in this following picture it is very expensive to be a triple A dev. They have to hire a ton of people to create a game. Programmers, Artists, Animators, music etc. I posted below a picture of how much money it is to put ads on TV. There is internet, social media, billboards and many other means to advertise that I did not include.

It is worse than that for indies. It is so hard to break in.  They are barely on the map and they are struggling to make a game.  Most triple AAA companies spend 2 x 3 x as much as the game costs to market a game.

In 2009, EA executive Rich Hilleman indicated in a speech that his company "now typically spends two or three times as much on marketing and advertising as it does on developing a game.

I personally think they need to focus less on marketing and more on developing

Alot of modern gamers are upset with how easy games have become

the bugs

the unfun gameplay

etc etc etc etc.

Games can make or break companies/individuals and it is sad when a person works so hard and in the end does not reap the rewards of their hard work. Some games are made by one person in their free time and they are not making the game just for profit.  It is love and soul and craftsmanship when it comes to a game.

Now a days if you are indie dev and you ignore the games social media. Fans get upset because you are not engaging with them about the game. They think it is dead,  also if you pay attention to it to much your social media your fans end up ordering you around to make a game  their way and you have no freedom in what you truly want to make. I cannot think of a game that the fans ruined yet but I think we will see it soon.  It is a tricky balance that goes back and forth a battle of ignorance and understanding which eventually leads to a final product.

This is why I support little guys

I feel also closer to their game design philosophy when it comes to game.

It is about perfecting past game design and making it new again.

So without any further wait here is

The first 5 games I will be throwing at you guys.

These are not in any particular order.

I love all of these games.

1.  Cryptark

Cryptark

Early Access with it being close to being released as a full game

is a space shootem up with rogue lite qualities that is focused on the simple goal of invading another freighter/ship and disabling the ship by beating the shit out of drones that come from your enemies freighter. There is a bunch of mini challenges like disabling alarm systems that ends up in a battle usually consisting  of 1000 drones and a big brain vs you. Every enemy freighter is different and everytime you play you will bump into something new.  The weapon design in the game is expansive with upgrades like napalm projectors nuke rockets and more. Every weapon has tiny niches that lets you play the game in new ways. Upgrades usually come atleast 1 per freighter.  It has crisp HD graphics and an industrial / scifi soundtrack.  On top of that there are users who are creating their own mods on the game which will make the game last even more longer.

It has a very positive review on steam with

2. Exanima

- Early Access with this being focused on a arena a beginning area that shows what the game is capable of doing which will evolve into game development for a open world rpg that is called sui generis.

Exanima/Sui Generis

is a physics based 2d isometric medieval  RPG

Think dark souls/diablo/chivalry in isometric form.

Right now there is a prison you start up in and then you explore through it and you start fighting skeletons. Every weapon has weight and hits differently. You can pause the game drag a chair flip it around and put it on a skeletons head making him blind or he cannot hit you well. You can set up rooms so enemies will trip and fall but be careful for you can trip and then your enemies can chop off your head. The game is a simulation for what a 2d game would be with physics. Try different things you will never know what can happen. I have killed a skeleton by slamming him in a door. The arena mode of the game is online too so you can battle people, and fight in what it looks like a drunken manor. I hope they do fix the animations in the game. Pretty neat title.

3.  Tales of Maj'Eyal

Tales of Maj'Eyal  - Released but new mods and content patches come out every month.

Now this one is a doozy that is for sure

This game is a rogue like-

Rogue like is a game that is turn based that is procedurally generated. Rogue lites are games that are inspired by rogue likes but they might focus on a certain aspect of the game more or less. With this game it is the full package you have the full roguelike experience. The tile based turn based content mixed with randomly generated level design and quests. When you get the game you have about 10 classes to start you off right. Well you can unlock 20 more. And there is mods that you can get 100 more classes. With this game one playthrough is a few hours so to complete the game on all dudes would be a feat. There is casters/aoe tanks/ tree summoning druids/ and classes that distort time and space/ idk how it works it just does. There is 1,650 achievements for the game permadeath and a lot of depth in the game. If you are not hardcore there is a mode that lets you just keep on playing after you die. You start in an area and it opens up to a world that you can fully explore and go by at your own pace. If you want you can kill off a whole town but good luck at getting a quest that you need to do to figure something out in the game.  You can add a co-op mode to the game so you can play with another person. No online though. This game is a bit old school and it might not be for everyone.  This whole thing is made with 1 person.

4. Catacomb Kids

Early- Access with updates going once a month to a week to sometimes when he is busy or having a hard time with code 1-2 months

This game is another roguelite where the content is randomized but it is based off of physics in the enviroment. You take a ball of goo bounce it on the ground jump off and attack an enemy. Or you can throw it at a guy and he will fall into a pit and then an enemy will attack and kill him and you survive for now. This game is very punishing with experimentation is the best key to survival. If you see something do not just run into battle but take your time and calculate the outcome. That is how I see people get far in this game. It also has co-op as well very replayable very hard all in all a great game. How you progress in this game is you get a leveling orb that is in every level and using the orb gives you little things that your guy can do.  Put it into def and you get a block that might unequip a enemies weapon. Free run for speed and you can run up walls or if you put it on the other choice you can mount off peoples heads. This game is very unique. I cant wait to see what comes out of the game.

5. Binding of Isaac

Binding of Isaac -Released but has a few modded expansions and 1000s of mods on the steam modding website

this creates infinite replayability with the base game.

Antibirth which was a modded expansion for Binding of isaac- Afterbirth came out december of last year

And alone I spent 100 hours in that game

This is my favorite indie game of all time.

and It certainly was a indie game with a small team but it became a hit over night and I would not be surprised if they are close to AAA status.

It got released for all major platforms with updates coming out for all systems.

Binding of Isaac is a twin stick shooter dungeon crawler with randomized dungeons.

It is like LOZ 2d mixed with smash tv.

Every single time you pick up the game it will be a new experience. You might have a run where you get nothing but health. Or you might just get damage pickups but since you got health you easily die. TO BAD you gotta restart. The goal of the game is to go through 8 levels and defeat the final boss. It wont be easy. But you can pick up 2 items per level. There also might be hidden doors you can get to which give you more rewards.  The random items change the look and style of your character and can change how the bullets look or what they do to enemies.  If you get really lucky you can get op and destroy the end boss with ease. There are 100s of pickup for your main dude to pick up. I did not understand or get the game first. If your like me and try different things in the game you will have a game of a decade right here! Antibirth added co-op to the game as well and it brings a whole new level to the game.

33 is my lucky number boi is my favorite well top five for me i hope antibirth gets melded into afterbirth plus

I am not a gamer anymore. But this was a tempting post. I remember almost getting kicked out of college cause of hours with Final Fantasy. My buddy still asks me over and has all these crazy nintendo finds. Cool to see the future. Great post. follow'd.

What games did he find

My friends do the same thing. Maybe one day you will play a game or two if not just enjoy life the way you have been doing

I have no idea what games they were. Sometimes its a weird fighting game, a race, bikers, shapes, colors... It's usually at a party and the games are just on. He is a fun dude i wish was on steemit. He sells vintage toys on instagram.

Hello fellow gamer! Glad you mentioned ToME! I bought it when the first review was “It´s ok”, while the guy who wrote it had over 7k hours in it…I wonder why that review disappeared because for me it was undisputedly the best review ever created on steam…:D any way seeing what you’re interested in. Will you adhere the calling your geekiness?
