The Legend of Zelda is one of the most iconic and longest running franchises in video game history. From its modest roots on the NES to the recent masterpiece Breath of the Wild, the games have featured thrilling gameplay, brilliant puzzles and countless memorable moments.

Not only are the games nearly all regarded as classics, the series features some absolutely amazing music. Today I'll be discussing my top 5 favorite pieces of music from The Legend of Zelda franchise.

#5 The Dark World

The first time I heard this theme as a much younger gamer, I knew something was drastically different. After the game throws you into the Dark World, this theme kicks in with a familiar-sounding but not-quite-normal tune that sticks with you. A truly memorable song 25 years after it first appeared.

#4 Gerudo Valley

This is a stand-out tune on an already iconic game soundtrack. The Spanish influence in the song is undeniable and sets it apart as a completely unique area within Hyrule when you first discover it. The song itself is incredibly catchy, heavily layered and complex.

#3 Ballad of the Goddess

Much like Wind Waker, Skyward Sword seems to be a criminally overlooked and unfairly judged entry in the series. While the motion controls take some getting used to and the game is much more linear than most entries in the series, it's a wonderful game if you're willing to give it a chance. The Ballad of the Goddess is a thrilling theme that perfectly captures the sense of adventure as you jump from Skyloft down into the danger-filled world below.

#2 Overworld theme

Of course, the original overworld theme has to appear on the list. This is one of the most iconic pieces of music in video game history and is as fun and full of wonder as it was when I first heard it in the late 80's. While the title screen and dungeon themes are memorable as well, this is the first piece of music you experience when you're starting the original adventure in Hyrule.

#1 The Great Fairy theme

In a surprise upset, I've chosen the Great Fairy theme as my favorite song in the Legend of Zelda franchise. The tune has modest roots, but has grown more and more complex and nuanced through the years. Once I heard the orchestrated version from the 30th anniversary concert, I was done. This is my favorite song from the series and I kid you not, I want this song played at my funeral. Its absolutely serene, moving and beautiful.
