It seems everyone remembers Captain N The Game Master, Super Mario Bros. Super Show and The Legend of Zelda, but there were many more cartoons from the 80's based on popular video game and arcade characters. Let's take a look at some of these earlier cartoons that time has forgotten.

Dragon's Lair (1984-1985)

Being a cartoon itself, its only natural for Dragon's Lair to get converted into an actual cartoon show. The series initially aired on ABC and ran for 13 episodes.

Dragon's Lair: The Complete Series is available on DVD exclusively through Warner Bros. disc on demand.

Pole Position (1984)

Somehow the arcade hit Pole Position was turned into a short-run cartoon series that aired on CBS and ran for 13 episodes. The show had little in common with the arcade game, but considering there was no story in the game its not surprising they had to craft something to build a series around.

The show is sporadically available across a few DVD collections and was even streaming on Hulu at one point, though it seems have been removed from the streaming service.

Pac-Man (1982-1983)

Being one of the most successful arcade games of all time, its no surprise that Pac-Man was turned into a cartoon. The show ran for a surprisingly long 44 episodes on ABC over two seasons.

Again with little to build from on the game alone, the cartoon built a larger world for Pac Man's adventures. The series is currently available on disc-on-demand from Warner Bros. or it can be purchased from the Microsoft Store.

Saturday Supercade (1983-1984)

Rather than featuring a single character, Saturday Supercade created episodes built from shorts centering on different popular characters. The show aired on CBS and ran for 32 episodes over two seasons. The characters featured on the show include Frogger, Donkey Kong, DK Jr., Q*Bert, Pitfall Harry, Space Ace and even Kangaroo.

The series isn't currently available to purchase or stream anywhere.

I only remember Pole Position and Pacman...

Wow! I remember some of these shows but I never really knew there was a Pac-Man cartoon series as well xD Gotta check that out later :)

Loved Pole Position. It wasn't until many years later I found out it was based on a videogame.

I know about Pole Position thanks to Joueur du Grenier and Pac-Man thanks to The Video Game Years. It’s interesting some of them are available in disc format but on demand.

@retro-room Do you reccomend any of them?

I definitely remember seeing the pacman cartoon on boomerang. It was trippy as hell
