A cheap and clever way to organize loose Sega Genesis cartridges

One of the headaches of being a retro video game collector is finding ways to display your collection and keep them neatly organized. Modern games are a snap, since they've been coming in either CD-sized jewel cases or DVD/Blu-ray sized cases since the PS2 era and there are a lot of convenient shelving options out there for media that size.

But older games can be a pain, particularly loose cartridges. Thankfully, NES games aren't an issue since they're already very close to the size and shape of CDs and fit into shelving that's designed for them. However, practically every other console's loose cartridges are a pain to neatly organized.

A solution has emerged!

Thankfully someone discovered this convenient storage solution for loose Sega Genesis cartridges: cassette racks! Genesis carts are very close to the dimensions of cassette tapes, so storage solutions for cassettes work nearly perfectly for Sega Genesis cartridges as well!

Last weekend, one of my garage sale finds (which I held onto until today) was a 100 cassette storage shelf, which was just $2. This one is a Laserline model, which even features holes in the back if you want to wall mount it. I've been looking for one for a while and I finally came across one. Its large enough to hold all of my loose Sega Genesis cartridges with plenty of room to grow!

And it works for Master System too!

Not only do they work for Sega Genesis carts, but they fit Sega Master System cartridges too! However, the lack of end labels on SMS carts does reduce the usefulness of this storage solution. If you don't have a large loose SMS collection, its probably a good compromise.

Not a 100% solution though

Damn you EA! The one downside is that its not a perfect solution. For some reason or another, EA decided to use a different size of cartridge shell for their Sega Genesis games and these are too narrow to fit the cassette rack. If you really wanted to display them here, I imagine that using the lid of a cassette case as a support would probably work, but that's a bit of a hack solution.

So if you have a bunch of loose Sega Genesis cartridges in your game collection, I highly recommend picking up one of these cassette racks. Garage sales and thrift stores are probably your best bet, but if you don't want to wait you can grab one on eBay, though they're selling in the $50 range. If you're patient, you'll find one sooner or later.

Was just waxing poetic last night with a friend about playing as tails in Sonic 2 on Genesis. That immortal little guy was the perfect little sibling player 2.

Haha, nice little "lifehack" there.

Man, I wish I wish I still had my Genesis to play.
