Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery - Waiting simulator for every Potterhead in your pocket

in #gaming6 years ago (edited)

Harry Potter. Every 90s kid grew up on it and loved it. The first movie came out when I was in the first grade, so I'm one of them. The books were great too, and all seven episodes I read simultaneously in a few days. So why not remember these years playing some mobile game? Who didn't want to get their own Hogwarts letter and learn magic?

That's exactly what this game offers, so it's a great attraction for every Potterhead. You become a Hogwarts student, you learn magic, cook potions, build relationships with classmates and discover the mysterious corners of the castle, all on your own skin fingers.

Google Play just can seduce you. But how does the game really look like in the eyes of a non-fanatic fan?

Plot

You reincarnate into a fresh Hogwarts student who doesn't have a scar, but bad reputation of his brother who was expelled from school is chasing him. That's what the whole school is talking about. Does it remind you of something?

They are friends with Indian (maybe) Hermione, with whom they do everything together and try to get rid of Merula, the female version of Draco Malfoy. At the same time, the school is talking about some mysterious Cursed Vaults, which your lost brother tried to find. Can you reveal its secrets?

I must note that I play as a female character, so it is possible that the male version will be slightly different.

Graphics

It is quite a decent attempt to do 3D graphics in a mobile game. However, its use is so minimalistic that it's a shame. I think a 2D graphics would be enough for a mobile game of this type. All animations are very repetitive, and after a few completed quests, they start to go on your nerves that you would like to kick your character into the face. Or, just be more focused on the creation of your character. Mine look really horrible from my point of view, and I'd rather punch her.

Soundtrack

I don't usually play with the sounds on, but I was especially interested in this game. Background music is in Harry Potter style, and it is nice, but when it comes to dialogue, you'll laugh a lot. The fact that the game is not dubbed doesn't surprise anyone, but the style of how the discussion is presented is really something. The characters just say "Ah, eh, oh, uh."

It sounds like bad porn.

Genre

The game is on all websites presented as an RPG. Well, I already played a couple of RPGs, so I think I know what I'm talking about when I say it's not an RPG. OK, you play the role of a little wizard, so when you take the role-playing literally, it is RPG, but it is not. It's rather an adventure game with RPG elements, because there is absolutely no action in the game. Or I didn't get to it yet, but since the dueling is totally without action, killing monsters wouldn't be any better.

Gameplay

In the beginning, you choose gender, customize the look of your character according to your taste, set up your name and start playing. When purchasing textbooks and a wand, you are slowly acquainted with the controls. But they aren't complicated at all.

Because most of the time in the game you will spend by clicking and consuming energy. It's as fun as it sounds. It's not. Little kids may like it, but you definitely don't. But you can't avoid this if you want to continue the story and learn new spells.

Once you have reached a sufficient number of clicks, you get a star. It usually means one of the three rewards and reaching a goal. So, finally, you'll get to something more interactive.

But don't expect something epic. You will have to answer a question, click on the screen at the right time or draw a line on the display.

With getting all the stars, you learned something. Charm, potion, or flight on a broom. Sometimes it's not that straightforward, and you have to collect the stars several times. You can see your progress in your notebook. The more you know, the more choices you will have in battles and other occasions.

In the story, you're moving forward with quests that you find in the quest log. Just click on the "Go" button, and it'll get you straight to the objective. So you don't have to wander around Hogwarts and search for it, but it might be fun too because thanks to that the whole game map is somewhat unnecessary.

And, as in the movie and books, your deeds influence the score of your House.

Dueling

You can't find some action in this game even in dueling because it is made in the form of Rock–Paper–Scissors. Well, of course, the actions are named differently. It's Aggressive-Defensive-Sneaky. So it's not about skill but coincidence.

Screenshot_20180621-162522.png

Aggressive wins over Sneaky, Defensive over Aggressive and Sneaky over Defensive. Whoever wins then can choose a spell or a potion that will either wound an opponent or heal you. When a draw occurs, it will heal a little the one who needs it more.

Dueling doesn't consume energy, but so far I have only gotten to it within quests.

Gobstones

It's such a strange game. I didn't pay attention to the rules, but you just want to distract the opponent to let him spoil the game. You do this in the form of reactions to the things he says. You have three options one of which is bad, and the other two will add points to your friendship. One of them is, of course, better and gives you more points. In the beginning, I didn't know what to do, but now I can see a pattern in it. Chatting with friends in the Great Hall works similarly.

Even Gobstones don't consume energy.

I never thought I would say it, but I miss adds

If you try to play the game for free, you will have to hang yourself, because you're still waiting for something. The worst is energy recharging.

energy.gif

As in the most games, you have the energy to use during missions. But it is desperately little and lasts for about 2 minutes of gameplay. Then you need 25x4 minutes to wait for it to be restored because there is no more effective way to get it. You can buy it only for crystals, but you never have enough, and if you have enough it is too precious to waste it on another 2 minutes. Yes, of course, you can buy crystals for real money, but it would be the biggest waste in your life. I'd rather buy some skin in Paladins or Overwatch because throwing about $ 23 for 500 crystals for which you purchase max half an hour of gameplay is just not worth it.

And besides the continually missing energy, you sometimes have to wait about 2 hours to go on a quest. But that is not so bad. Meanwhile, your energy will be replenished.

This artificial gametime stretching I hate that much that, even though I want to find out what the whole story is about (even though it is too similar to Harry Potter), I won't get to the second year. I play the game for the third day, and I am in the middle of the first chapter against my will...

Summary

Well, do I have to write anything else?

This game doesn't use its name and potential at all and playing it is more than annoying. The creators should rethink their attitude because this artificial gametime stretching with eternal waiting took players from them. I think a lot of people would rather buy the full version of the game and finish it in a few hours or saw some adds to get some free energy and currency at least.

In addition, it's gameplay is more than marginal, and it lacks the slightest action. You just keep clicking for nothing. Is that really what people want?

I would replace the process of boring clicks with some minigames. I would cook the potions interactively according to some recipe, and in the duels, you would cast spells without any line help. And if you had some decision in the dialogue, I would have given it a time limit. Doesn't it sound much better?

So I absolutely don't understand how this game can have 4.4/5.0 on Google Play. People, are you drunk? Such a Paladins Strike is a thousand times better. For me, it won't be more than 2.5/5.0.

These games always seem like a giant cash grab. I use to try being a f2p in a couple of games where people where they were p2w and sometimes I could find a way to somewhat crush big spenders; other times, it was clear you had no chance. Time gating things behind a paywall is never fun. That just seems frustrating.

that just seems frustrating.

In multiplayer it's a normal thing, but this is singleplayer. I understand that studios want to make some money even on the f2p games, but that game must be worth something at first. This one is not. They would have to remake it.

Nové logo už je v akci ;-)

Jojo, když už jsem se s ním dělala :D

Tak proč ho nevyužít ;-)

great game summary my friend. Some game ratings are funded by companies so don't put too much stock in those ratings. Keep up the great work.

Thank you! I know that some ratings are funded, but still, when I read a few, a lot of people don't like waiting and clicking, etc. but they still give it five stars. Just why?

You just tell it how it is! Nice :D

The mobile market is comprised of 99% of these games, they shouldn't even be allowed in the stores at all.

Hell yeah! :D This game made me mad a lot. It's just a click bait and misbehaves the whole Harry Potter brand.

The mobile market is comprised of 99% of these games, they shouldn't even be allowed in the stores at all.

Well, this was actually the worst mobile game I ever played so I hope I won't bump into another one, but with 99% it'll be hard :D So far, I had no bigger problem with the use of energy in f2p mobile games because you actually played something at least. But in this game, it is a complete mockery, and I agree that it shouldn't be in the store.

Most licensed mobile games are just that, click bait without any other purpose. Sure, there are a few good, unlicensed ones (Fallout Shelter, Paladins...), but most of them are just designed to trick kids into spending their parent's credit card.

Good free games, on the other hand, should be supported. Not the case here :)
