What other feelings are there to have after E3 2018 than excitement and apprehension.
The lackluster showing by EA, their apology over the terrible micro transaction riddled battlefront 2. The company that has continually bought and closed down some of the best minor game studios with reckless abandon. They have cancelled several decent looking games in the past just to shove another FIFA and madden game down your throat at $59.99 a pop that looks no different than the year before. They did announce a few promising games like, unravel 2, jedi: the fallen order, sea of solitude, and anthem finally got a release date. Let's all give them a huge eye roll for the reveal of yet another battle royal mode included in battlefield V.
Xbox gave us a fairly decent showing this year, while it might be too little too late for the xbox one since now we are aware that the folks at microsoft are already hard at work on their next generation of consoles. The companies acquired 4 independent game studios. AMD created a brand new division in a push to create more first party content in the future.
The initiative. Microsoft own creation based out of Santa Monica, CA will be working on new worlds, characters and game experiences for the franchise.
Playground Games. A personal favorite of mine, based in the U.K this studio brought us the Forza Horizon games. The E3 press conference even hinted that the studio would bring its open world outlook to a new IP in the future.
Ninja theory. This studio brought Kung Fu Chaos to the original xbox and hellblade to the xbox one.
Undead Labs. This seattle studio brought you State of Decay 1 and 2 while already xbox exclusive the intent to buy shows that microsoft wants to bring more resources to the company to create more ambitious games.
And finally, Compulsion Games. Xbox has entered a letter of intent to purchase the studio that brought you We Happy Few. Not for creative control but to bring more money and support to a smaller studio.
One of my favorite features to come to the xbox one is game pass. They announced some improvements to the platform that hits you for only $9.99 a month as opposed to Sony's playstation now at $19.99. With a decent assortment of classic Xbox 360 titles and newer Xbox One games. The service even started day one support for Xbox exclusive titles like Sea of Thieves, State of Decay 2, and Crackdown 3 if that game will ever see the light of day.
As far as game announcements go, the ones i feel are noteworthy will cover with the individual developers. I have to mention this one here though, My all time favorite gaming franchise Kingdom Hearts will makes its
First Xbox appearance with the 3rd installment of the mainline games on Xbox One in Januaryof 2019.
Bethesda games studio made some waves this year.
A Co-Op fallout game based in West Virginia was the highlight of the event. New base building mechanics and a map said to be four times larger than fallout 4. There is some speculation on how good a multiplayer bethesda game will be with their history of massive single player games. We got a teaser for The Elder Scrolls VI which was basically a landscape and some music but none the less i am excited to see where the franchise goes after Skyrim. We also got an extendes trailer for Rage 2, a new co-op wolfenstein, and they finally announced Starfield with not much else but a name.
Ubisoft gave a solid showing with a new take on their Assassin's Creed series. The newest installment will be called Assassins Creed Odyssey, which in itself is a new experience due to the fact you play as a spartan warrior turned mercenary long before Bayek founded the hidden ones. The first assassin free Assassins Creed has a Mass Effect feel with relationships and a speech wheel that I can't wait to get my hands on. Some other games shown were, Beyond Good & Evil 2, The Crew 2, The Division 2, Just Dance 2019, Skull and Bones, Transference, Trials Rising, and Starlink: battle for atlas which brings Star fox into a Sci-fi toy game from the studio. Ubisoft mentioned some For Honor updates to round out their showcase.
Now Sony on the other hand shows fewer games than previous years but did a pretty extensive look at all of them. Finally bringing us The Last of Us Part II, and Spider-Man glorious web slinging free roaming Spider-Man. For those of you who have fond memories of previous titles cam rejoiced we finally have our game on the PS4
And finally, I have saved my personal best for last Nintendo. So leading up to E3 this year it was rumour after rumour about Pokemon for the switch. Giving us a glorious looking remake of pokemon yellow in the form of Pokemon lets Go Pikachu and Eevee. They did a deep dive on the game showing some good gameplay footage and even made us aware of the mainline title coming sometime in 2019. Fortnite is now playable on the Nintendo switch, with announcements for Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Octopath traveler, Daemon x Machina, Super Mario party, And finally Super Smash Brothers Ultimate. We got a really good look at some DLC for one of my new favorite JRPGs Xenoblade chronicles 2.
All in all every year we want to talk about who "won" E3. The only thing i can say to that is we did the gamers. New console talks, brand new IPs, and improvements to current titles. If you're a die hard video game fanatic like me any news like this is always a win. I'm constantly on the lookout for new games and experiences to share in alone or in a multiplayer setting.
