Forged Battalion Preview - Petroglyph returns to a well-known battlefield

Old school real-time strategy titles are clearly dear to Petroglyph. The team, which consists of former Westwood Studios, previously worked on titles like Command & Conquer and Dune before focusing on smaller budget titles inspired by the genre they helped define. Forged Battalion, the studio's newest project, is a retro-inspired rt in a war-ridden world that offers players a whole range of factional adjustment options to form their own individual armies. We could take a quick look at the title prior to his Early Access period and were impressed by how it is starting to look like.

Forged BattalionThe story begins at the end of the 21st century, where severe climate change has led to the collapse of society as we know it. With scarce resources and areas that have been reduced to deserts, there is a malevolent group called The Collective that has seized power in much of the world. You play as a group of resistance fighters whose goal is to liberate the world from the stranglehold of The Collective and to return peace to the dilapidated world. The story, as you probably thought, is a bit cliché and the episode of it does not help. This is told through blocks of text and a rare intervention of dialogue during the 'campaign'. However, this is not a big problem,Forged Battalion largely succeeds.

If you have the necessary rts titles behind you then you feel immediately at home in Forged Battalion. You build factories that produce different types of units, send 'harvesters' out to collect resources and build battle towers to eliminate intruders. Your goals are also the normal course of events, where you usually have to disable enemy strongholds, protect civilians and hold territories as a kind of Capture The Flag. All important elements feel well executed, albeit somewhat predictably. The only complaint we have concerns the artificial intelligence of your team. Your troops simply seem to miss common sense to fight back if they are not introduced to it. This can be frustrating, especially if you are trying to maintain multiple bases at the same time.

Just like the story, the control of Forged Battalion is also not explained in an ideal way, since an in-game tutorial is missing (not surprising considering the title is still in Early Access). Players who are well-versed in classic RT titles should not have any problems with this, as it uses a fairly common approach, but we can imagine that it can be difficult for newcomers to the genre. Building a building is as simple as clicking it in the menu and dragging it onto an open area; Commanding your troops also requires just a click and drag motion to select them and a right-click to send them into the fight.

What Forged Battalion manages to excel is the faction-adjustment mode. Here you can change the name of your faction, customize the weapons and equipment of your units and add upgrades to your headquarters and super weapon. These have the power to completely change the game and there is enough flexibility to support every style of play. Whether you choose the frontal attack or rather strategically cut off the raw material supply of your opponents. However, every small change must be considered. For example, if you upgrade the armor of a unit, it can better defend itself, but it also increases the costs and the speed at which it is made.

Your efforts on the battlefield reward you with research points that can be spent on upgrading your skills in the 'tech tree'. These skills work together with the factional adjustment mode and let you expand your library of adaptive skills. This would be fine if you had more options at the beginning, but instead of this you get a fairly steady playing method until you unlock more skills by completing jars. This may have been done to keep the balance at the beginning, but we were somewhat disappointed here as we had imagined a full-fledged mode that would give players all creative freedom right away.

There are five campaign missions in the Early Access build, as well as Ranked and Unranked online modes and, of course, a Skirmish mode. The Skirmish mode managed to grab our attention most even though we had to deal with frequent 'crashes' when starting up the jars. The Skirmish mode contains a great selection of ten maps and there are two additional modes outside of the standard combat: Annihilation and Destroy HQ. In Annihilation you have to destroy all conflicting units and buildings and in Destroy HQ, as you can probably guess, you have to destroy the headquarters of the opponents. Each folder can be played with up to eight players and you can adjust the difficulty of your computer-controlled opponents from Beginner to Insane.

Although the road up to the release can be a long one, Forged Battalion is already a solid rt with some interesting own additions. The faction-adjustment mode, although limited at first, allows players to build an army of their choice and the Skirmish mode is already loaded with maps and game types to dive into. The narrative campaign is somewhat disappointing at the moment and struggles to distinguish itself from other RTS titles. We hope that Petroglyph can use the Early Access period to make Forge Battalion something special.

Thanks for reading.

Pretty cool that you can upgrade and edit your faction! Just not sure it differentiates itself enough for me to play it...
