Gaming Retrospective - Total Annihilation: Kingdoms

in #gaming7 years ago (edited)

Total Annihilation: Kingdoms is one of my favorite RTS games from 1999. This game was a spiritual successor to Total Annihilation, an older SF cousin this game took huge inspiration from, who later had another spiritual successor in Supreme Commander games. Both games were developed by Cavedog Entertainment. Kingdoms is a fantasy version of Total Annihilation with 4 unique factions fighting each other (5 with Iron Plague expansion pack). Every race had their monarch, this was way before Warcraft3 heroes were introduced. Every monarch had very helpful abilities like faster build times and battle abilities like fireballs and novas that would help you clear blobbed enemy units.

Factions and their leaders are Demonic Tarros with Lokken, Beastial Zhon with Thirsha - a winged monarch, Sea nation Veruna with Kirenna and standard human faction Aramon with Elsin at the helm. All of these faction had unique tiered units. In order to expand your base and tier up you had to collect mana from mana nodes that were spread out on every map, and as always in these type of games you had to watch over them for steady supply of mana, without your main resource it is game over fast. Mastering all four factions was a long process and a fun one for me, everyone had several of those game changing units like dragons, krakens, giants, etc. and once you've built them they could change every battle in your favor. Got to have cool units and this game had an abundance of those. Total Annihilation: Kingdoms was go to RTS fantasy game at the time, I would even recommend retro gamers to play it today if they somehow skipped this one.

Rts was my favourite genre when I first started playing on PC. Started with Warcraft 2 short after it came out and kept on with games like Starcraft, Red Alert, AoE.. was never any good but I loved these! Haven't played this game though. Looks quite good for back then. :)

RTS games were awesome back then. Every one of those games is still alive somehow today, all except Red Alert. I wish we had some awesome announcement from nowhere that Red Alert is coming back from the dead. Age of Empires redux and Age of Empire 4 should be sweet. AoE4 is in the hands of Relics, who's who of RTS games, so it must end up great, or at least I hope it will.

All i've been doing lately is to be a professional spectator haha watching SC2.. It is so much more fruistrating to try and actually play RTS Games nowadays.
